Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 review: Olympus Stylus Tough 8010

The Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 is one of the most durable pocket cameras you're going to find. Its metal body and shock-absorbing system can survive drops of up to 6.6 feet and it's crushproof up to a weight of 220 pounds. On top of those things it is...

Extremely rugged for a compact; very good feature set; full, built-in user manual; 1.6GB of internal memory for photos, video.

Frustratingly slow performance; soft photos; pricey.

The Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 is rugged on the outside, but average on the inside.

Olympus Stylus Tough-8010

With its tap-enabled interface, the Olympus Stylus Tough-8010 is a good fit for those who want a top-of-the-line rugged build, HD video capture, and a camera that's easy to operate while using gloves.

Good image quality with low noise. Water-, freeze-, drop-, and crush-proof. Tap-enabled interface. Lens is protected by a retracting shield. 2GB of internal storage. In-camera manual and guide.

Pricey. Images are soft towards the outer areas of the frame. Noticeable shutter lag. Long delays between shots. LCD shows motion blur.

Review: Olympus Stylus Tough 8010

Run it over, drop it from great heights, drown it. The rugged Olympus 8010 can meet any physical challenge set before it.

The Chuck Norris of point-and-shoots — virtually indestructible. More functions than we know what to do with. No casing needed to take pictures under the sea

Shutter is prohibitively slow. Photo quality not on par with similar rugged cameras. Menu system needs a serious overhaul

Olympus Tough-8010

The Olympus Stylus Tough-8010 is the latest in Olympus's Tough series of take-a-licking, keep-on-ticking digital cameras. Featuring a shockproof, waterproof, freezeproof, crushproof body--we're starting to wonder just how many more things Olympus can...

A wide-angle, non-protruding lens ; Sensor-shift image stabilization ; Durable construction ; Deep underwater capability--33 feet ; Shockproof to a drop from 5 feet ; Freezeproof to 14F or -10C ; Crushproof to 220 pounds of pressure ; In-camera manual...

Sluggish performance ; Redundant controls ; Power button small, not always responsive ; Poor battery life ; Weak flash ; AF struggles in low light ; Few manual controls ; LCD somewhat dim in bright sunlight ; No relay recording between internal memory...

Ultimately, it's hard to find a more rugged camera, but the Olympus Tough-8010 really needs a speed improvement. Most people needing a rugged camera would also like a fast one for capturing their lives in action. Last year's Stylus Tough-8000 was a...

Olympus Mju Tough 8010

The Tough 8010 is the strongest compact that money can buy, and features HD video recording. Still, its slow performance means you will miss critical shots and its image quality is only just OK.

Toughest compact camera money can buy ; Full SD/SDHC support ; HD video recording ; Many improvements over the previous model

Can't save high-quality JPEGs in Program mode ; Image quality only just OK ; Double-locking battery and card door can be fiddly

The Tough 8010 is an improvement on the older Tough 8000 camera, and is the strongest compact that money can buy. Still, its slow performance means you will miss critical action shots so do bear this in mind, and image quality is average.

Olympus µ TOUGH 8010

Darting down a ski slope with the odd tumble shouldn't stop you taking photos. Neither should mountain biking, or even surfing, for that matter. Olympus has set out to create an even Tough-er compact; a camera that enjoys being beaten up and pushed...
