Compact Camera Group Test: SLR-like 'super zoom' cameras

It's now more than a year since we published our last superzoom group test and despite the hype surrounding mirrorless system cameras such as Micro Four Thirds or the Sony NEX, and the fact that entry level DSLRs are becoming more and more affordable,...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35

It isn't pocketable, but the relatively compact Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 ($400 as of 11/12/09) is quite simply one of the best fixed-lens cameras out there for both stills and HD video. If you can deal with slightly grainy, non-1080p video footage (the...

High dynamic range produces creative shots ; Great image controls for both stills and video ; Light and well designed for a megazoom

No flip-out LCD or optical viewfinder ; Button layout and controls are cumbersome

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 is a powerful, semicompact megazoom camera with an awesome range of controls for both stills and video.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 review

With the Lumix DMC-FZ35, Panasonic overhauls the insides of its popular FZ28 megazoom, offering higher resolution, an improved optical image stabilizer, faster AF, and support for the AVCHD Lite movie codec. But while the camera does deliver better...

Useful 27mm wide-angle zoom; excellent image stabilization; full selection of manual and automatic exposure controls; very good 720p movie capture with operational zoom and manual controls; relatively fast.

Noise and compression artifacts in JPEG photos; no hotshoe.

A better-than-average megazoom choice, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 delivers standout video capabilities and an excellent manual feature set. Still, it suffers from a lot of the same drawbacks as its competitors, including weak photo quality.

As mentioned earlier, the picture quality isn't perfect, and performance lags on occasion. If you already have experience with digital SLRs, you may find this camera to be a nice backup or casual shooter. For the price, this model is an excellent value...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ38 Review

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ38 (also known as the DMC-FZ35) is a new super-zoom camera sporting a wide-angle 18x zoom lens. Successor to the popular FZ28 model, the bridge-style Panasonic FZ38 compact camera has the same key features of 27-486mm focal...

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ38 builds on the proven design of its predecessor, the FZ28, making few handling changes but adding a number of significant new features that comprise a better overall package. We're a little disappointed that Panasonic...

Lumix DMC-FZ35

And those are just the major changes! There are a few other differences that I'll touch on as this review progresses

Very good photo quality ; Packs an 18X, 27 - 486 mm lens into a relatively compact body ; Optical image stabilization ; 2.7" LCD display offers very good outdoor visibility ; Full manual controls, with support for the RAW image format ; Intelligent...

More shadow noise than I'd like, even at base ISO 80 ; Some redeye; no removal tool in playback mode ; Movies created with AVCHD Lite codec are difficult to share and edit; frame rate isn't true 60 fps ; Unremarkable continuous shooting mode ; Easy to...

Despite some annoyances -- most of which can be worked around -- the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 is an impressive super zoom camera. For those of you who want a full-featured super zoom camera with elaborate movie recording features, the FZ35 should be...

Panasonic DMC-FZ35

Good for travel, with fine wide-angle coverage, powerful zoom and pleasing portability

Strong noise results; Impressive resolution results

Poor color accuracy overall; Some distinct oversharpening

The Panasonic Lumix FZ35 is a very practical all-around camera. It’s highly portable, if not pocketable, and the combination of a fast wide-angle lens and long zoom makes it a great travel camera, able to capture both scenic vistas and distant...
