Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1 reviewed

We were pretty stoked when we heard about the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1 a couple weeks ago because of its relatively thin size and fully 16:9 wide-angle CCD, and it looks like HardwareZone's among the first we've seen with a review. Besides that 8.4...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1 is a versatile camera for those who want something smaller than a D-SLR, but its performance disappoints.

Shoots at true 16:9 aspect ratio. Zoom lens starts at true wide angle. Excellent LCD. Impressive battery life.

Pricey for a compact camera. Flash is too strong (though adjustable). Images noisier than expected. Some pincushion distortion. Noticeable shutter lag.

A versatile camera for those who want something smaller than a D-SLR, with lots of pro features and controls, but the images are noisy and you'll find the shutter lag irritating.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1

Expensive, attractively styled point-and-shoot camera offers multiple aspect ratios, but image noise is a problem.

The DMC-LX1 provides lots of advanced features, along with plenty of point-and-shoot capabilities. The aspect-mode options will also appeal to photographers who want to escape the ordinary, but the noise at higher ISO settings makes the camera unsuitable

Announced alongside the FZ30 in July, the Lumix LX1 is the world's first compact camera with a 'widescreen' 16:9 ratio CCD sensor, combined with a 28-112mm (equiv.) wideangle 4x Leica-branded zoom lens. As with all Panasonic cameras, the LX1 features a...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1

16:9 native aspect-ratio CCD; wide-angle lens; image stabilization; decent photo quality; versatile burst mode; TIFF and raw formats; 2.5-inch LCD.

No optical viewfinder; LCD difficult to view in dim light; no white-balance presets for fluorescent light; some image artifacts.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1 has a broad set of manual controls, image stabilization, and a wide lens and sensor crammed into a compact package.

The Panasonic LX1 is a pretty unique digital camera. It packs a 4x zoom lens into a surprisingly compact body and mates it to a 16:9 sensor with options for 4:3 or 3:2 aspect ratios, too. Panasonic throws in their excellent Mega OIS Optical Image Stabiliz
