Review: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX30

With a 28-mm wide-angle lens, this 7.2-megapixel shooter captures a larger field of vision than most. Too bad the results aren't better: Colors were off...

Copious panoramic features for land scapes and large group shots. Intuitive menus. Decent shutter lag (0.68 second with flash)

Poorly placed control dial. Lowest picture quality in the group. Loud, sluggish autofocus. Image stabilization is inconsistent. Videos saved in annoying QuickTime format

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX30 Review

Despite its diminutive size the ultra-compact Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX30 is a sort of photographic kid brother to the prosumer Panasonic FZ8.

Panasonic DMC-FX30

Excellent image quality when printed ; Natural colour rendition ; Very good optical qualities and zoom starting at the equivalent of 28 mm ; Excellent image stabilizer ; No serious shutter lag ; Long exposures up to 60 seconds ; Fast to use

Compression a touch too strong at the highest image quality if images are going to be used for something other than standard prints ; Noise at all sensitivity levels ; Higher sensitivities (800 ISO and up) nearly useless

Panasonic Lumix FX30

A slim and wide camera, the Lumix FX30 defies the oxymoron

A nippy little compact which has some great features and good quality results. Maybe a touch fiddly to use but weightier than some of its competitors.

Panasonic Lumix FX30

The FX30 was marketed upon its release in 2007 as the world's slimmest digital camera with 28mm wideangle lens

OIS, Size, Design, Ease of use

No major upgrade

Hats off to Panasonic, whose FX30 boasts ease of use, great noise control and wideangle capabilities which are complemented by its Mega Optical Image Stabilisation to seal the deal as a fantastic compact choice.
