Panasonic DMC-FP8

Pocket cameras are a boon to photographers. Think about it! For instance, imagine carrying a super zoom or even an SLR whenever you step out. Though they are considered to be a requirement for every shutter bug they don't quite offer the same kind of...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8

If Panasonic's Lumix DMC-FP8 looks a lot like the rugged TS1 the company launched earlier this year, it's because the two cameras have a lot in common. Although the FP8 won't survive a dip in the drink or a drop to the floor like its brawnier brother,...

Quick start-up, autofocus and low shutter lag, Excellent image quality in proper lighting, attractive design

No lens cover, Initially unintuitive rear controls, Noise at high ISOs hampers indoor shooting

Speedy startups, focusing and shooting make the FP8 always at the ready.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8 (red)

Looking at the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8 you wouldn't think there's anything special about it; you'd think it's just another ultracompact point-and-shoot. To some extent that's true, but it actually attempts to address a common complaint plaguing most...

Small and lightweight; fast start-up and low shutter lag in good lighting; simple operation; great battery life.

Overcautious auto ISO; internal lens leads to fingers in shots; photos look slightly overprocessed.

The Lumix DMC-FP8 lives up to Panasonic's speedy performance claims; its photo quality isn't bad, either.

Review: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8 camera

The durable and compact Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8 point-and-shoot camera offers an ultraquiet, recessed lens that focuses very quickly, but you'll need to make sure that its design works for you.

The 12-megapixel Lumix DMC-FP8 has a boxy but stylish frame, made out of metal and seemingly impervious to anyone with a mild case of fumble-itis. However, though the camera build is durable, the 4.6X-optical-zoom wide-angle lens (28mm to 128.8mm) is...

Panasonic DMC-FP8

Panasonic has released a new camera model, the Lumix DMC-FP8, and it has made some heads turn. A quick glance might impress casual customers and photographers with its rectangular, standard zoom compact style included with a 12 megapixel sensor...

Compact design ; Shoots 720p HD video ; Decent flash performance

Can be uncomfortable to hold for some ; Slow LCD monitor can make fast shooting difficult

All in all, the FP8 is a friendly camera to novice photographers by virtue of its sparkling AF performance and quite speedy shutter lag alone. The camera acquire focus quickly across a broad range of lighting conditions and takes the shot with little...

Product Specifications

Built of high-quality aluminum, the DMC-FP8's flat body provides an attractive design for the camera's rear surface. A cool hairline panel in the center of the camera adds an exquisite accent for a striking overall appearance. The LED cursor button also adds an elegant brilliance to the design each time they are pressed. Beautiful when carrying about and shooting, the DMC-FP8 is a stunning all-round camera for users who are particular about both image quality and camera design. POWER O.I.S. is about twice as effective as MEGA O.I.S. at reducing low-frequency vibration-caused blur when pressing the shutter button or shooting with a slow shutter speed. So you can take beautiful night shots without blurring. Activating POWER O.I.S., Intelligent ISO Control, face detection AF/AE with face recognition, intelligent scene selector, intelligent exposure and AF tracking, and the camera does all the work in the iA mode. Face recognition function recognizes registered persons' faces and optimizes the focus and exposure settings. This lens system features the folded optics technology realized by the inclusion of a prism. It comprises 10 elements in 8 groups, with 1 ED lens and 5 aspherical lenses / 6 aspherical surfaces to achieve high optical performance while maintaining compactness. Furthermore, in 3-megapixel resolution, the extra optical zoom function provides additional magnification, extending the zoom power to 9.1x (35mm equivalent: 252mm). To realize the ultra high-speed AF, a number of re-engineering and improvements are made including the adaptation of a higher-speed actuator, the optimization of algorithms and the parallelization of software processing element. The result is ultra high speed yet accurate AF performance for users to enjoy the airy shooting that has experienced never before. Panasonic also replaced its linear program processing with parallel processing to achieve an ultra high-speed start-up of approx. 0.95 seconds. The DMC-FP8 can record motion pictures in high-definition. The pixel mixed readout method enables bright motion-picture recording even in low-light settings. It also lets you use zooming when taking motion pictures. With HD component output capability, you can enjoy watching HD motion pictures in stunning HD quality taken by your DMC-FP8 by simply connecting the camera to an HDTV via an optional component cable DMW-HDC2.
