Panasonic's nicely designed, elegantly styled Lumix DMC-FX100 is a near-twin to the Lumix DMC-FX55. Both are reasonably small and light, though they won't slip comfortably into a shirt pocket.

Smooth, precise lens mechanism Solid construction

Pricey for a pocket camera Short labor warranty (90 days)

The DMC-FX100 is a pleasing package--solidly constructed, with flexible, user-friendly controls and a high resolution for really big prints

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX100

This feature-rich camera delivers sharp 12-megapixel photos and is the first of its kind to offer a wide-angle 28mm lens.

Good picture quality ; Optical image stabilization ; Two widescreen modes

Runs slowly when loaded with 12-MP images ; Noisy images at even low ISO settings

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX100 (Silver)

Panasonic follows the if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it logic by keeping the body design essentially the same as that of their other FX-series cameras. The 3.6x optical, 28mm-to-100mm (equivalent), f/2.8-to-f/5.6 zoom lens extends from the front of the...

Wide-angle 3.6x optical zoom lens; Intelligent ISO mode; optical image stabilization.

Noisy images above ISO 400; sluggish shot-to-shot and startup-to-first-shot times.

If you absolutely must have a 12-megapixel compact camera, the DMC-FX100 isn't a bad choice, but you can find better performing cameras with lower pixel counts for the same money.

The ultra-compact camera arena is a crowded one. Can the DMC-FX100 keep up with the competition? Find out now in our review

Very good photo quality at lowest ISO settings (though see issues below) ; Wide-angle 3.6X optical zoom lens ; Optical image stabilization ; Ultra-compact metal body, comes in two colors ; Large, sharp 2.5" LCD display; screen visible outdoors and in...

Noise reduction smears details when ISO is 200 or above ; Corner blurriness, redeye are both problems ; 720p movie mode only 15 frames/second ; High sensitivity mode not terrible useful ; No optical viewfinder ; Flimsy door over battery/memory card...

In conclusion, I like the Lumix DMC-FX100, and can recommend it. At the same time, I'd say that the 12 Megapixel resolution is overkill for the vast majority of people, and that buying one of the lower resolution Panasonic ultra-compacts would be a...

Lumix DMC-FX100 digital camera

The Panasonic DMC-FX100K is streamlined enough not to baffle novice users, but even seasoned shutterbugs ought to consider this is as a backup to their SLR or DSLR.

Easy-to-navigate interface ; Wide-angle lens ; 12-megapixel sensor ; Good detail and exposure

No manual controls ; Mediocre battery life

Serious shutterbugs may be disappointed at the lack of manual exposure controls, but in our Macworld Lab tests, there was little reason to second-guess the camera's calculations. The DMC-FX100achieved Good scores for image and flash quality, and Very...

"The best camera I ve ever owned!"

- has great anti-shake feature - your pictures NEVER blur!! (I have tried Sony & Canon before, and no other camera lived up to its anti-shake promise!)

- a little heavier than other cameras (but that doesnt matter at all to me, because its so awesome with its other features)

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX100

Nice large CCD sensor with 12.2 megapixels. Built like a champ.

Unexceptable noise at ISO 400 and above ; Distortion at wide angle is visible

Product Specifications

The DMC-FX100 ushers in a world of photographic quality by capturing high-resolution, distortion-free images with the 28mm wide-angle LEICA DC lens, and sending that rich picture information to the large, 1/1.72" 12.2-megapixel CCD. This camera renders every image - from the natural scenery and delicate flower petals you encounter while traveling, to the glistening eyes and lustrous hair of your loved ones - in glamorous, exquisite detail. The sweeping angle of view offered by the 28mm wide-angle lens and the rich gradation of the 12.2-megapixel resolution combine for the very first time in a compact model to further expand the enjoyment of shooting photos. With high, 12.2-megapixel resolution even the slightest blurring or noise is visible. This is why Lumix uses the Intelligent Image Stabilizer to suppress blurring, and employs the multi-task image-processing engine, Venus Engine III, to reduce noise without lowering resolution. MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) suppresses hand-shake to give you crystal-clear photos at night and in dimly lit party rooms, while keeping the mood intact. The advanced MEGA O.I.S. in the DMC-FX100 can even separate hand-shake from other types of camera movement to raise both the detection precision and corrective effect. Intelligent ISO Control detects subject motion and compensates for blurring, so you can clearly capture sports action, moving animals, and small children playing indoors. And Venus Engine III enables high-sensitivity recording with full resolution all the way up to ISO 1600. The maximum sensitivity of the Scene Mode's High Sensitivity mode has been raised to ISO 6400 to allow shooting in nearly total darkness. When using the High Sensitivity mode, the built-in flash reaches as far as 16 m, letting you capture clear images even in dim lighting. Lumix's acclaimed Scene Mode function now includes a Hi-speed Burst mode for even greater versatility. The mode shoots up to 8 frames per second at high speed. By selecting a mode from among the 20 Scene Mode settings, such as Sunset, Scenery or Night Portrait, the camera automatically sets the parameters for optimum image quality. The Mode Dial also includes settings such as Motion Picture Mode and a Macro Mode for shooting objects like flowers up close. Just select the mode that matches your shooting situation. Enjoy viewing crisp High Definition 1920 x 1080 pixels photos with a 16:9 aspect ratio on your living room's large-screen HDTV. Imagine the smiling faces of family and friends, and images of memorable moments, covering the screen with clarity and power. Let the high-resolution images of your large-screen HDTV transform the room into a photo gallery, and gather around to share the excitement.
