Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 Camera

The lens on the Panasonic DMC-FZ20 looks bigger than the camera itself. Among cameras we've tested, this model's 12X optical zoom is the longest, with a 35mm-equivalent range of 36mm to 432mm. Despite the length, the lens protrudes only about 2.25...

Big 12x zoom lens Optical image stabilization

Low battery life

The DMC-FZ20 earned high marks for exposure quality in our lab tests, but it fared less well in resolution-dependent tests like those for sharpness and distortion; this was mainly because it was up against several models with 7-megapixel or higher...

A huge, long lens with an optical image stabilizer, but it had disappointing battery life in our tests.

Leica 12X optical zoom lens with constant f/2.8 aperture and image stabilization. Very comfortable, SLR-like feel. Powerful feature set. Lots of control over exposure.

Large and heavy for a superzoom. Poor video mode.

The 5MP Panasonic DMC-FZ20 isn't perfect, but if we could only take one camera with us on vacation, this would be high on our list. With its impressive lens and other capabilities, there are few scenes it couldn't handle with aplomb.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 (black)

Although we generally like the placement of the controls, the all-important shutter release is about a half-inch too far back, making it moderately uncomfortable to reach. You access most of the camera's features via the Menu button. The menus are easy...

A remarkable 12X, f/2.8 zoom lens; excellent optical image stabilization; solid manual focus; generally speedy performance.

Mediocre handling; inefficient exposure compensation/exposure setting logic.

If you love supertelephoto photography, this Panasonic looks like the camera to beat.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 review

DPReview takes a look at the 5 megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 (a replacement of the FZ10), with it's 12x optical super-zoom, improved image-stabilization system, and Panasonic's proprietary Venus II system, which is equivalent to shooting up to 4...

Panasonic DMC-FZ20

Sitting at the top of Panasonic's deservedly popular super zoom range, the FZ20 gets as close to the handling, versatility and quality of a digital SLR as any compact yet; offering superb, responsive handling, masses of control, a stunning 12x F2.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 is a 5-megapixel digital camera with a high-quality Leica 12x optical zoom. The Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 12x zoom is equivalent to a 36 - 432mm zoom on a 35mm camera and has a constant F2.8 brightness throughout the entire zoom

Bottom line - the Lumix DMC-FZ20 is a great addition to the Panasonic family. With its great image quality, speedy performance, and reasonable price tag of $599, its sure to make a great gift idea for your holiday gift list. If this is out of your price r

The final thing to mention before we begin is that the camera comes in your choice of black or silver bodies. And with that out of the way, we can start our review of the DMC-FZ20

Very good photo quality (though a bit noisy) ; F2.8, 12X optical zoom lens ; Image stabilization system ; Very little purple fringing; unusual for an ultra zoom camera ; Full manual controls including ability to fine-tune white balance ; AF-assist lamp...

Above average noise levels, redeye, and barrel distortion ; LCD and EVF don't "gain up" in low light ; Can't remove memory card while camera is on tripod ; EVF resolution isn't so hot compared to other cameras these days ; A VGA movie mode would've...

Despite a few flaws I highly recommend the DMC-FZ20, just as I did the FZ10 before it. If you want the FZ20 in a smaller package and don't mind the lower resolution or plastic body, have a look at the DMC-FZ3. Either way, you've got yourself a great...

Panasonic Lumix FZ20S-K

Not too long ago, we had a heart-to-heart encounter with the Lumix FZ10 digital camera from Panasonic. Today, we get to sit down with the Lumix FZ20, and take a look at some of its upgrades on its predecessor, the FZ10, and its own unique features. The...

Overall, this is a great digital manual camera which is slightly more powerful than its previous model, the FZ10.

Product Specifications

The DMC-FZ20's advanced zoom lens takes you all the way from 36mm wide angle to 432mm telephoto. Shoot open landscapes, zoom in on a room interior, or pull a distant object right up close - all with instant zooming ease. With the FZ20, you get the same capabilities as a single-lens reflex camera equipped with a full set of interchangeable lenses. Use it to explore a new level of photographic expressivity. For example, use normal magnification for most ordinary shots, medium telephoto for portraits, and super telephoto for special long-range shots. The FZ20 even gives you the same capabilities as a super-telephoto lens in the 400mm, F2.8 class - something every serious photographer should have. Remarkably, the FZ20 offers the kind of specifications you get with a big, heavy lens, but in an extremely compact, lightweight package. With most compact zoom lenses, the brightness tends to be lower in the telephoto range. Not the FZ20. Its 12x optical zoom lens delivers F2.8 brightness all the way to full telephoto. This gives you more expressivity and greater ease of use because the exposure value doesn't change even when you zoom out to shoot long-range telephoto shots. The Elmarit lens made by Leica Camera AG of Germany has earned the acclaim of top photographers everywhere. Now some of the same cutting-edge technologies that make this lens so exceptional have been adapted to the digital camera. Presenting the LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens that inherits the traits that make Leica a legend in the camera world. Small in size yet featuring a large, bright aperture, this lens meets Leica's stringent quality standards. In fact, the FZ20 goes a step further by using ED (extra-low dispersion) glass in its lens, which helps minimize the refraction differences among light of different wavelengths. This helps to suppress the color bleeding that often occurs in telephoto shots, giving you crisp, vivid images no matter how far you've zoomed in on your subject. The CCDs used in most digital cameras have much smaller light-receiving areas than film does, so photos tend to have a high depth of field. This means that everything in the photo - including objects in the foreground and background - is in focus. The FZ20, however, takes advantage of its 12x zoom and large F2.8 aperture to offer the kind of expressivity you cannot get with conventional digital cameras. You can snap photos that capture the subject in a clear, sharp focus while giving the background a beautiful soft focus. Use the 4x digital zoom together with the 12x optical zoom and you've got ultra-powerful 48x zooming. That approximates a huge 1728mm lens on a 35mm camera.
