Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 Digital Camera Review

This compact 12-megapixel ultrazoom could be a perfect traveling companion, with fine wide-angle coverage, powerful telephoto and pleasing portability.

The Panasonic Lumix FZ35 is a very practical all-around camera. It's highly portable, if not pocketable, and the combination of a fast wide-angle lens and long zoom makes it a great travel camera, able to capture both scenic vistas and distant...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35

It isn't pocketable, but the relatively compact Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 ($400 as of 11/12/09) is quite simply one of the best fixed-lens cameras out there for both stills and HD video. If you can deal with slightly grainy, non-1080p video footage (the...

High dynamic range produces creative shots ; Great image controls for both stills and video ; Light and well designed for a megazoom

No flip-out LCD or optical viewfinder ; Button layout and controls are cumbersome

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 is a powerful, semicompact megazoom camera with an awesome range of controls for both stills and video.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35

With the Lumix DMC-FZ35, Panasonic overhauls the insides of its popular FZ28 megazoom, offering higher resolution, an improved optical image stabilizer, faster AF, and support for the AVCHD Lite movie codec. But while the camera does deliver better...

Useful 27mm wide-angle zoom; excellent image stabilization; full selection of manual and automatic exposure controls; very good 720p movie capture with operational zoom and manual controls; relatively fast

Noise and compression artifacts in JPEG photos; no hotshoe

A better-than-average megazoom choice, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 delivers standout video capabilities and an excellent manual feature set. Still, it suffers from a lot of the same drawbacks as its competitors, including weak photo quality.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 (Lumix DMC-FZ38)

The sensors in these cameras are considerably smaller than you will find in a DSLR or mirrorless interchangeable lens model. One of the advantages of a smaller sensor is that, compared to an SLR, you need a physically much smaller lens. As you can see...

As mentioned earlier, the picture quality isn't perfect, and performance lags on occasion. If you already have experience with digital SLRs, you may find this camera to be a nice backup or casual shooter. For the price, this model is an excellent value...

Lumix DMC-FZ35

And those are just the major changes! There are a few other differences that I'll touch on as this review progresses

Very good photo quality ; Packs an 18X, 27 - 486 mm lens into a relatively compact body ; Optical image stabilization ; 2.7" LCD display offers very good outdoor visibility ; Full manual controls, with support for the RAW image format ; Intelligent...

More shadow noise than I'd like, even at base ISO 80 ; Some redeye; no removal tool in playback mode ; Movies created with AVCHD Lite codec are difficult to share and edit; frame rate isn't true 60 fps ; Unremarkable continuous shooting mode ; Easy to...

Despite some annoyances -- most of which can be worked around -- the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 is an impressive super zoom camera. For those of you who want a full-featured super zoom camera with elaborate movie recording features, the FZ35 should be...

Review: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 camera

A powerful, semicompact megazoom camera with an awesome range of controls for both stills and video.

It's hard to know where to start, as this is such a versatile megazoom camera. The DMC-FZ35 excels in manual controls and low-light video footage, and it offers near-perfect automatic settings, unique scene modes, and a slew of imaging options (RAW,...

Product Specifications

The DMC-FZ38 can record HD movie of 720p in AVCHD Lite. And a stereo microphone, featuring Dolby Digital stereo creator, records high quality audio. Just press the motion picture button, and shooting begins. In the creative movie mode, the shutter speed and aperture can be adjusted. The iA mode can also be activated in motion picture recording. When the DMC-FZ38 is connected to a Panasonic VIERA via a mini HDMI cable, the TV's remote control unit can be used to enjoy playing back with greater convenience. The DMC-FZ38 features a 27mm wide-angle 18x optical zoom f/2.8-4.4 Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens in a compact body. The lens unit comprises 11 elements in 8 groups, with 2 ED lenses and 3 aspherical lenses, including a dual-sided aspherical meniscus lens. The powerful 18x zoom can also be used in motion picture recording. Furthermore, in 3-megapixel resolution, the extra optical zoom function provides additional magnification, extending the zoom power to 35.2x. Power O.I.S. is about twice as effective as MEGA O.I.S. at reducing low-frequency vibration-caused blur when pressing the shutter button or shooting with a slow shutter speed. So you can take beautiful night shots without blurring. Activating Power O.I.S., Intelligent ISO Control, Face Detection AF/AE with Face Recognition, Intelligent Scene Selector, Intelligent Exposure and AF Tracking, the camera does all the work in the iA mode. Face Recognition function recognizes registered persons' faces and optimizes the focus and exposure settings. To realize the ultra high-speed AF, a number of re-engineering and improvements are made including the adaptation of higher-speed actuator, the optimization of algorism and the parallelization of software processing element. The result is ultra high speed yet accurate AF performance for users to enjoy the airy shooting that has experienced never before. The DMC-FZ38 also replaced its linear program processing with parallel processing to achieve an ultra high-speed start-up of 1.2 seconds, a remarkable 20% decrease from previous model. The joystick gives the DMC-FZ38 its precise, full manual operation. Simply move the joystick vertically or horizontally to adjust the shutter speed, aperture or focus during manual focus. In addition, easy manual operation is possible with the DMC-FZ38. My color mode makes it easy to customize color effects to match your favor. The advanced scene mode lets you quickly set the frequently used portrait, scenery, sports, night portrait, or close-up modes with the mode dial. And you can adjust the aperture or shutter speed in each creative mode.
