Panasonic Lumix DMC-LS2 reviewed

With its most recent Lumix models, Panasonic looks poised to include image stabilization as a feature in cameras at every price point, including low-end models. And from the review of the 5 megapixel DMC-LS2 on Photoxels, it looks like the anti-shake...

Panasonic Lumix LS2 First Impressions Review

The Panasonic Lumix LS2 pushes the price point for optical image stabilization, with Panasonic's full-blown MEGA O.I.S. in a 5 megapixel compact camera for under $200. The small, 3x zoom camera would be price-competitive without stabilization as it is...

- Affordable camera with good image stabilization - White balance fine-tuning - Simple interface - Good build quality

- Image noise - Lack of exposure control - Low-resolution LCD - Movie mode is low-resolution and silent

We hope that Panasonic starts a trend by offering such low-cost image stabilization. We're not sure competitors will or can do it as well; MEGA O.I.S. appears to be very good stabilization on the Lumix LS2, and has been excellent on previous...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LS2 Digital Camera - Full Review - The Imaging Resource!

Digital cameras have seen plenty of advances in recent years and while most of the attention has been focused on high-end models with all their bells and whistles, the category that's actually reaped most of the rewards has been the low-end. Who could...

Optical stabilization helps greatly for hand holding the camera in dim lighting, Extremely easy to use, Very good battery life, Accurate LCD viewfinder, Fairly fast startup/shutdown, Good macro focusing capability, Good color control, not...

While most users might associate Optical Image Stabilization as something used to steady long zooms, it can be extremely beneficial to shooting close-ups, especially in low-light when you don't want to blow out your subject with a flash. On the LS2,...

Panasonic Lumix LS2

Panasonic's new entry level camera of 2006 is the Lumix LS2. The Lumix LS2 features 5 megapixels, a 2 inch LCD with Panasonic's new "high-angle" function as well as an optical image stabilizer, a Panasonic standard. And it's relatively a bargain too;...

Great battery life ; Optical image stabilization ; Live histogram and exposure info ; Extremely fast ; Unlimited continuous shooting ; Advanced white balance control ; User friendly with simple controls and menus ; Very affordable at $199

Low resolution LCD ; Poor movie mode ; Macro mode not as close as on other cameras ; Image quality is so-so; high noise levels ; Red-eye ; No movie zoom

The Panasonic Lumix LS2 has everything an entry-level camera should have. Featuring 5 effective megapixels, a 2 inch LCD, excellent battery life and simple menus and controls. It also adds something nice - optical image stabilization.

This is a point-and-shoot camera with as a main feature the mechanical anti-shake option. I have a very unstable hand, and I can say from experience that the anti-shake function works very well, even in full optical zoom. Macro mode pictures are very...

As others posted, it has troubles getting nice pictures in dark areas ; There is no sound when recording movies, a bit of a shame ; The batteries that came in the box went empty very fast, I will probably buy rechargeable batteries for it and pay more...

My 1st digi cam, brought mainly due to the image stabaliser. down side can be image quality due to the jpeg only format, dark shots that need flash are very noisy, blues and blacks blending in make my suit look strange. otherwise great starter cam.

The little Panny is my first digital camera after the delights of an Olympus OM2SP. And the new pocket sized electronic beauty is a belter! Though my hands are huge, I had no problems adjusting the Mode Dial atop of the camera. A logical layout,...

The instruction book is a shocker! It reads like a computer translation of Japanese into ; English. Some directions make no sense, and others are just plain weird - such as ; Page 81 Playing Back Pictures - "Motion pictures cannot be played back. To...

Great value! Perfect pictures for normal use, very useful features of image stabilizator, up to 60second night shots, ability of "multishoot" as long as you want (immediately saving to SD card, about 1shot per second), 5shots/3seconds fast burst great...

Slow photo copying to computer (USB 1.1 - 700kB/s), better is copy images by inserting SD card into reader

Product Specifications

Panasonic is introducing the incoming LUMIX model 5.0-megapixel DMC-LS2, incorporating MEGA O.I.S., an Optical Image Stabilizer that compensates the handshake, and 3x optical zoom lens that runs on two AA batteries. MEGA O.I.S. is the image stabilization system against handshake that bears no picture deterioration. Panasonic is the first company in the industry to have succeeded in incorporating MEGA O.I.S. into a compact digital camera and now its benefit is strongly approved by the users of the world, considered to be the standard of photography. Compared with the previous model DMC-LS1, the LS2 has been externally redesigned into more compact and stylish form. For the performance, the LS2 speeds up its AF time by newly adopting 1-point high-speed AF options. For more easy and comfortable shooting, scene mode options are also enhanced totally providing thirteen to fit wider-ranging situations. For the brain of the camera, the LS2 incorporates continued Venus Engine Plus, which saves energy consumption to achieve long battery life while maintaining quick response and high picture quality. As you recall, the blurred image caused by hand shake is the biggest problem of digital camera photography. Normally, the compactness of the camera results in the good portability and shooting using LCD helps fine view, however, these advantages may stand in the way because they reduce stability on the other hand. However, MEGA O.I.S. solves those problems. The spur-of-the- moment for which you're not ready enough to keep your posture and the low-lit indoor or night time, when the shutter speed tends to slow, and macro shooting in which even a slight move will spoil the picture, all those are common situations accompany blurry pictures. However, MEGA O.I.S. enables you to easily take clear, beautiful pictures in even in such situations. This capital feature is subsumed under no other cameras but LUMIX among the entry class models that run on AA batteries. The high performance of Venus Engine Plus is evident with the quick response allowing you to take three frames per second at full resolution and even to shoot successive photos until the memory card or the built-in memory reaches capacity in its Unlimited Consecutive Shooting mode. What's more, the 14 MB of built-in-memory is continued, which enables you to take pictures even when you do not have an SD Memory Card, and allows you to always have your favorite pictures in your camera wherever you go. Also, despite the high capability, the battery life achieves 250 pictures (CIPA) recording with included two AA OXYRIDE batteries. The DMC-LS2 is the perfect compact camera especially for the entry-level users thanks to its variety of supportive settings of Mode Dial and Scene Modes together with MEGA O.I.S., to easily take clear, beautiful pictures worth preserving.
