Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ1

The very affordable Panasonic 4-megapixel DMC-LZ1 and 5-megapixel DMC-LZ2 feature a DC VARIO lens with 6x optical zoom (equivalent to 37mm to 222mm on a 35mm camera), with capability of up to 24x magnification when combined with the 4x digital zoom, and M

Image stabilization; large zoom range for its class; solid image quality, three burst modes; easy operation.

Few manual settings; no audio capabilities; low-res movie mode.

This compact camera combines good photo quality, optical image stabilization, and a long 6X zoom for a bargain price.

Image stabilization noticeably improved our test shots, and 6X optical zoom is longer than that of most compacts. Competitively priced.

Some jaggies were present in the flash shots. Dynamic range could be better. No viewfinder. Video capabilities are extremely limited.

The LZ1 is not a bad buy. Speed and flash performance, however, could be better.

Digital Cameras - Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ1 Digital Camera Review, Information, Specifications

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ1 is a pretty unique digital camera, there really isn't anything else like it on the market from any of the other manufacturers. It packs a 6x zoom lens into a surprisingly compact body, and throws in Panasonic's excellent...

Nice long (6x) zoom lens, Optical stabilization helps greatly for hand holding the camera in dim lighting, Despite oversaturation of bright colors, skin tones look good, Very good battery life, Accurate LCD viewfinder, Fairly fast startup/shutdown,...

High contrast, has trouble with harsh lighting, Bright colors are rather oversaturated, Images slightly soft for a four-megapixel camera, High image noise at ISO 400, High barrel distortion at wide angle, soft corners in images at telephoto, Flash has...

Fairly quick on the draw thanks to a smoothly operating retractable lens design, the Panasonic DMC-LZ1 is a convenient point-and-shoot digital camera with a handful of extra exposure features for further flexibility, plus the added bonus of an...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ1/LZ2

With that in mind, this review will be a little different than most. I will be reviewing two cameras in one review, using the LZ2 as the "model" in the product photos. I will offer sample photos and some test shots from both cameras

Good quality, sharp photos (but see issues below) ; 6X optical zoom lens in a midsize body ; Optical image stabilization system ; Excellent performance ; Good continuous shooting mode ; Great battery life ; Histograms in record and playback mode

Images a little too sharp, leading to "jaggies"; some vignetting ; Redeye ; LCD doesn't "gain up" in low light ; No optical viewfinder ; Poor low light focusing; no AF-assist lamp ; Paltry 14MB of internal memory doesn't hold many photos at highest...

I like the concept of the DMC-LZ1 and DMC-LZ2 a lot. I just wish the execution was a little better (the LZ3 and LZ4, maybe?). The two cameras earn my recommendation, but mostly for outdoor shooting. Those taking indoor and low light shots will likely...

"A good camera, reasonable price, easy to use"

I´ve got this camera for 6 months, I´ve probably over-used it. I went to the beach for one month, and it worked really good, the night pictures were really impressive.

6x zoom, economy mode, shot burst, good night shots

the zoom control is not ergonomic, poor video quality and no audio available.

Owners Opinion: Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ1 (KlausMP, 2 Apr 06)

Have had a Opympus camera that I used for my job for long time, but after I got a FZ-3, I wanted something with optical stabilizer, and I also is getting used to have more that a x3 zoom.... Found the FZ-1 to fullfill this - and for a very good price...

Owners Opinion: Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ1 (kiti, 24 Dec 05)

Good things: Excelent optics and digital zoom! Even on 24x (6x optical + 4x digital)! Outstanding battery life, one pair last for 100-150 shoots. Good mechanical construction, camera has very low weight. Perfect manual white balance. Optical image...

Product Specifications

Jitter from shaky hands is one of the main reasons why cameras produce blurry images. Panasonic does not expect everyone to have hands of stone when taking pictures - that's why Lumix cameras help solve the problem of unsteady hands with advanced MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer technology. The DMC-LZ1 has a built-in gyrosensor that detects any hand movement and relays a signal to a tiny microcomputer inside the camera, which instantly calculates the compensation needed. A linear motor then shifts the Optical Image Stabilizer lens as necessary to guide incoming light from the image straight to the CCD. You won't even notice it working - all you'll see are the outstanding results!
