Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 Digital Camera Review

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1, available online for about $250, is a compact point-and-shoot camera with a 5-megapixel imager and a 10x Leica-branded zoom lens. With Panasonic's effective Mega Optical Image Stabilization, it promises steady shots for the...

- Low Price - Simplicity - Good Image Stabilization - 10x Zoom

- Lack of manual control - Zoom control is balky - Poor flash performance - Noisy image quality

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 was released last year at a time when the ultra-zoom market was beginning to expand and consumers were looking for compact options. The 5-megapixel TZ1 filled that niche, but since its release better cameras have stepped...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1

As is the case with most of Panasonic's Lumix models the TZ1 is available in either silver or black (though this may not be the case for every country and / or every retailer).

Unique compact with 10x image stabilized zoom ; Good resolution, surprisingly sharp folded optics lens ; Bright, breezy punchy results out of camera ; High quality construction ; Highly versatile 35-350mm zoom range ; Good shot-to-shot speed ; Reliable...

Noise - and heavy noise reduction - make ISO 200+ usable only for small prints ; Noise visible in shadow areas even at ISO 80 ; No manual control of shutter speed or aperture ; Some metering issues, particularly in backlit scenes ; Default contrast and...

Putting aside all talk of noise reduction and other image quality metrics I should firstly say that I really liked the DMC-TZ1; it offers a unique twist on the popular 'super zoom' concept, and having such a huge focal range in an (almost) pocketable...

Powerful image stabilization. Very good picture quality. Small for a superzoom.

Shutter lag. LCD solarizes.

This compact superzoom takes great shots, but a few underperforming features keep it from greatness.

Panasonic Lumix TZ1 First Impressions Review

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 houses 5 megapixels on its 1/2.5-inch CCD and couples it with a lengthy Leica DC Vario Elmarit 10x optical zoom lens. This amount of zoom is fairly generous considering that the TZ1 is only an inch and a half thick. The lens...

Quiet 10x optical zoom lens ; Effective image stabilization system ; Zoom active in movie mode ; Function guide in scene mode menu

Gimmicky High Angle LCD mode ; Inadequate flash range ; ALL CAPS IN THE MENUS ; High sensitivity mode only available at reduced resolution

The Panasonic Lumix TZ1 is an inch and a half thick and has a Leica-approved 10x optical zoom lens that folds into the camera body when powered down. The folded optics is just one solution that manufacturers have tried in order to tack more zoom onto...

The Panasonic DMC-TZ1 is currently the smallest digital camera in the world with a 10x zoom lens. Thanks to some very clever folded optics technology, the Panasonic TZ1 allows you to carry a...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 Digital Camera - Hands-On Preview

The Panasonic Lumix TZ1 is a nice little camera at a great price, with a 10x, optically stabilized zoom lens, high ISO Scene mode, and large LCD. The large 2.5-inch LCD screen, while less accurate than most, is great for sharing your photos with...

Swivel design provides a significant compositional advantage, 10x Nikkor zoom in a compact package, Vibration reduction technology, Face detection autofocus in Portrait mode, In-Camera Red-Eye Fix, D-Lighting to lighten underexposed subjects,...

Not much room for the right hand to grip, Small zoom lever, Awkward lens cap, Vertical flash next to lens on swivel design, EV adjustment hidden in menu system, No Manual, Aperture Priority, or Shutter Priority mode, Not as fond of the silver color ;...

The Panasonic TZ1 offers a higher-than-average movie resolution of 848 x 480 pixels, as well as lower-resolution 640 x 480, and 320 x 240 pixel options -- all of which use the QuickTime Motion JPEG format common on most digicams. The Panasonic TZ1...

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TZ15 -

With its zoom range, good color rendition and amazing screen, the Panasonic Lumix TZ15 is just a manual mode short of being 'prosumer'.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1

Hopefully that helped a few people out there

Very good photo quality (though see issues below) ; 10X optical zoom in a small package ; Optical image stabilization system ; Well built metal body comes in at least two colors ; Large 2.5" LCD display is visible in low light; handy Power LCD and High...

Images noisier than they should be, especially at high ISO sensitivities; unimpressive high sensitivity mode ; Redeye ; Flash is on the weak side ; No viewfinder of any kind ; Some manual controls would've been nice ; No USB 2.0 High Speed support ;...

All-in-all, I liked the DMC-TZ1 quite a bit -- despite its flaws. If you want an ultra zoom camera that isn't a burden to carry around then the TZ1 should be high on your list.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1

Panasonic introduced the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 digital compact camera in Lisbon February this year. During the introduction, it soon became clear that it was an extremely compact Mega zoom digital camera, in fact, one of the world's smallest Mega...

Product Specifications

Panasonic Lumix cameras go from strength to strength with technological advancements designed to offer the ultimate in picture performance and user convenience. Building on its digital still camera achievements, Panasonic presents you with the world's smallest 10x optical zoom digital still camera, made possible by the world's first integrated retractable lens system with folded optics technology. The lens part of the super-compact TZ1 features the integration of a retractable lens system with folded optics technology, realized by the inclusion of a prism. Incorporating three aspherical lenses, the crystallization of Panasonic optics technology, results in an amazingly powerful 10x optical zoom LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens contained within a slim and stylish body. The zoom ratio can be extended up to 12.5x in 3 megapixel resolution mode with minimal deterioration thanks to the Extra Optical Zoom. Furthermore, in combination with the 4x digital zoom, a zoom factor of up to 50x can be achieved. The DMC-TZ1 boasts the newly developed Venus Engine III, offering the ability to take 250 pictures on a single charge whilst consuming only 80% of the power utilized by the predecessor, Venus Engine II. The TZ1 allows unlimited consecutive shooting up to the capacity of the 13.4MB built-in memory or the SD memory card. This new engine, the brain of a digital camera, boasts outstanding response time with an industry leading shutter release time of only 0.006sec minimum (the time taken between pressing the button on the camera and the photo being taken) and a shutter interval of approximately 0.5 seconds, thus enabling easy capture of spur-of-the- moment shots. In the burst shooting mode, it is possible to shoot at three frames per second in full resolution.
