Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3

The TZ3 is a bit of an odd duck. Though it boasts an excellent 10x optical zoom, it's still a few features short of being an actual superzoom – a category in which Panasonic has a strong foothold. Going by the overall looks and build of the TZ3, I'd...

That said, the Panasonic TZ3 in outdoor light is capable of catching excellent detail levels and colors in images, making it ideal for outdoor activities. While the price we got from Panasonic TZ3 was Rs 24,990, the actual market price with bill and...

The 7.2 Megapixel Lumix DMC-TZ3 is the latest entry to Panasonic's popular TZ family, and features a 7.2-megapixel CCD imager, 28mm wide view LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens, Intelligent Image Stabilization, with the industry's most advanced countermeasures...

The DMC-TZ3 also includes the Panasonic Venus Engine III, their most advanced image-processing engine to date. The engine helps to improve noise reduction and can record at a sensitivity setting as high as ISO 1250 with full resolution. With its...

I'm all for mega zoom cameras. With zooms ranging from 10x up to 18x these cameras offer tremendous shooting options for shutterbugs. Want to bring your subject close? The telephoto does it for you. And since they're much lighter than any D-SLR with a...

Compact 7MP; 10x zoom; 3-inch LCD; optical image stabilization

No manual aperture or shutter adjustments; slow when using flash

At this price it's a good choice for people who want to take a versatile digicam along on their travels.

Lumix DMC-TZ3

The Panasonic Lumix TZ3 is the sophomore version to last year's ultra-zoom compact TZ1. Tailored for the world traveler to the soccer mom, the TZ3 is targeted for movers and shakers who want the convenience of a point-and-shoot but the zoom...

10x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilization ; Nice LCD size and resolution ; Three aspect ratios ; Wide video shooting ; Plenty of scene modes including a Baby mode

Tiny buttons on the back of the camera ; Harsh Flash ; Weight of a half a pound versus lighter point-and-shoots ; Limited manual controls

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3

S previous Editors' Choice budget superzoom was the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7, which has a 12X optical zoom lens and, at less than $400, is still a good buy. One thing that camera lacked, however, was a true wide-angle view. I'm glad to say that the...

Nice 28mm wide-angle lens. Very compact. Big 3-inch LCD. Unique modes, like Intelligent ISO mode.

No true manual features. No RAW options. Can't change amount of flash.

When looking for a superzoom, don't settle for less. Panasonic's Lumix DMC-FZ7 has a powerful zoom lens with a nice wide viewing angle, too. If you're still not convinced, the Lumix is stylishly compact, takes awesome pictures, and is affordable to boot.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3S (silver)

The DMC-TZ3 looks almost identical to the DMC-TZ1, sharing its predecessor's chunky 9-ounce frame, its prominent lens, the tasteful gold-and-silver Leica accent, and a straightforward, minimalist control scheme. I readily accessed the camera's buttons...

Wide, powerful lens with little distortion; quick performance.

No manual exposure controls; tiny buttons; no stop-motion movie mode.

Though it leaves out one fun, little shooting mode, the Panasonic DMC-TZ3 improves upon its predecessor in nearly every way.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3

As is the case with most of Panasonic's Lumix models the TZ1 is available in either silver or black (though this may not be the case for every country and / or every retailer).

Uniquely versatile compact with 28-280mm equiv. lens ; Excellent resolution, surprisingly sharp lens ; Unusually versatile aspect ratio options ; High quality construction for the price ; Little (if any) color fringing ; Very low distortion ; Good...

Heavy noise reduction - make ISO 400+ usable only for small prints ; NR smoothing/smearing of fine detail and texture even at ISO 100 (and fairly strong at ISO 200) ; Mild vignetting at widest zoom setting / maximum aperture ; No manual control of...

I really liked the TZ1 - as a concept and as a camera to use - and I would have been able to give it a much more wholehearted recommendation had the image quality issues and shutter lag not let it down so badly. The TZ3 is a camera I wanted to like...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3

That's not too shabby, eh? And while it's not sold in the USA, I should mention the TZ3's little brother, the Lumix DMC-TZ2. It's the same camera, but with a lower resolution CCD, smaller LCD, and better battery life

10X, 28 - 280 mm lens in a relatively compact body; lens has remarkably little barrel distortion ; 28 mm wide-angle available at all three aspect ratios ; Good photo quality, even better with a few tweaks ; Optical image stabilization ; Enormous, high...

Still too much noise reduction, which smears details once the ISO leaves 100 ; Colors tend to be dull straight out of the camera (use vivid mode if you agree); some overexposure issues ; Needs more manual controls ; Useless high sensitivity mode ; No...

Something I tend to forget sometimes in this job is that photography is supposed to be fun. Like its predecessor, the TZ3 reminds me that there's more to photography than test charts and Mickey Mouse figurines. It lets me have my cake and eat it too: I...

Product Specifications

The DMC-TZ3 is more compact than the previous model, and has been given a more luxurious touch with its stylish design and metallic, stainless-steel exterior. Newly integrated lens barrier takes the place of the lens cap, to ensure that it never gets lost again. This is a camera that you will want to take with you always. The DMC-TZ3 features a 28mm wide-angle 10x optical zoom Leica DC lens (equivalent to a 28mm-280mm zoom on a 35mm film camera) in an ultra-compact body. With the wide-angle lens, you can get all your friends in the picture or capture an expansive landscape in a single shot. And with the high-power 10x optical zoom, you can get clear, beautiful shots even when you can't get close to your subject. The lens unit comprises eleven elements in nine groups, with three aspherical lenses, including dual-sided aspherical meniscus lens, to achieve high optical performance while preserving compactness. The dual-sided aspherical meniscus lens represent a major achievement in mass-produced lens elements, and enable the remarkable 28 to 280mm range of focal lengths in this compact body. Inheriting the fine rendering and outstanding quality of the LEICA ELMAR lens, this easy-to-carry camera delivers beautiful pictures any time, any place.
