Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS5 (Silver)

Editors' note: Many of the design, features, and shooting options are identical between the DMC-ZS5 and the DMC-ZS7 we reviewed earlier, so readers of the earlier review may experience some déjà vu when reading the same sections below.

Lots of features to experiment with; manual, semimanual controls; 25mm-equivalent wide-angle lens with a 12x zoom.

Disappointing low-light photos.

If you just want a decent compact megazoom, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS5 is one of the better options thanks to a well-rounded feature set and very good photo quality at lower ISOs.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS5

Compared with some feature-packed competitors, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS5 ($250 as of May 19, 2010) is a solid, no-nonsense pocket megazoom camera. Emphasizing smooth, versatile performance, its 12X-optical-zoom lens (25mm to 300mm) offers quiet...

Practically silent zoom-lens motors ; Excellent camera for shooting video ; Very fast autofocus

Sometimes has trouble with extreme macro shots ; Images often look underexposed

The Lumix DMC-ZS5 brushes aside most fancy extras and gets down to brass tacks. Its manual controls and fast-focusing 12X-optical-zoom lens make it a big step up from 2009's Lumix DMC-ZS3.

Review: Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS5

The Lumix DMC-ZS5 brushes aside fancy extras and gets down to brass tacks. Manual controls and a fast-focusing 12X-optical-zoom lens make this model a big step up from 2009's Lumix DMC-ZS3.

Like most pocket megazooms, the Lumix DMC-ZS5 is a bit too large to be truly pocket-size. It can squeeze into an inside coat pocket and would have little trouble fitting into a bag, purse, pair of overalls, or kangaroo pouch, but the 1.3-inch-deep...

"I expected much more when I bought this camera."

I will never buy another Panasonic camera.

I really see no pros for this camera. Picture quality, poor construction and dust make it a poor camera.

DUST and less than great picture quality. Low light is very poor, and the lens is not as good as my old Kodak Z650.

Consumer review by:

"Dust is drawn into camera when lens opens"

Drawing dust into the camera when the lens opens is an enormous problem. When you extend the lens, dust is drawn into the internal components of the camera. It is not a matter of simply wiping it off. This problem is well documented on the Internet if...

Fairly good pictures, works on double A batteries.

Dust is drawn into lens when opened and cannot be cleaned.

Consumer review by:

"Excellent picture quality with lots of pro features."

I thought I'd post this as a counter-balance to the negative reviews that trash the camera based strictly for battery issues.

Great zoom with real wide-angle. Even greatly enlarged pictures show very little pixelation. Offers lots of manual and semi-auto shooting modes for photo geeks. Easy-to-use. Scene modes work well. Excellent build quality with most metal body.

LCD display could be brighter in sunlight. A little slow shot-to-shot. Flash could be a little brighter.

"Message "This battery cannot be used" all the time."

I don't recommend buying a Panasonic DMC series.

Movies are of very good quality.

Photos are not good

"Full of features, this is a great all around p&s camera"

I have had this camera for over a year and have gone to many places with it and I must say it has performed very admirably and better than expected. With its many many options, great looking pics in most modes, and super zoom capability, I would...

I have taken this camera to Washington D.C and from morning to night it performed amazingly well. The automatic mode does its job if not on a little low key mode. What I mean is that it doesn't take that many risks in the pics it takes. However, if you le

The Zs5 does have some drawbacks however. Anything above 400 ISO will produce some minor but still there grain and anything above 600 unless played with is very noticeable. The camera can be temperamental when dealing with its setting at times...requiring

BEST CAMERA EVER!!!!!! BEST CAMERA EVER!!!!!!!!

I had been reading reviews on cnet and watching countless videos on the Nikon L110, the Canon Sureshots, and even a few Samsungs and the Sony Cybershot. I was at best buy today and tried a few out. The Nikon was true to the reviews, some advantages but...

Infinite settings for like 30 different types of subjects to photograph, from food to portraits to landscapes to sunsets! Amazing indoor shots and outdoor, the quality of pictures is what I have always looked for, sharp, crisp and so bright. A

More explanations on the different picture modes would help, I had to play with the camera to learn the ropes. This is normal with any new technology, you can't expect to turn it on and work magic without knowing how, so really, no cons yet anyways
