Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH20 (purple)

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH20 is a sub-$180 compact camera featuring a wide-angle lens with an 8x zoom and HD movie capture and, really, that's all. That might sound like a complaint, but it's not. It does what it does well, and though there's room for...

Easy to use; flexible lens in a compact metal body; very good value for features, performance, and photo quality.

Feature set might be too basic for some.

Panasonic's Lumix DMC-FH20 is a very good value for anyone in need of a basic point-and-shoot with a midrange zoom.

Panasonic FH20 First Impression Digital Camera Review

Front We were drawn to the candy apple red version of the Panasonic Lumix DSC-FH20 shown here, with its high-gloss paint job. The camera will also be available in silver, black, red and violet.

It's hard to know how impressed you should be about a camera untill you know how much you're paying for it, and Panasonic won't release that information until 30 days before the FH20 starts shipping. And, of course, image quality is unknown at this stage.

"Zoom and stabilizer are highlighted"

The picture quality is not as great, lacking in pictures and apply compression freedom in control. Also, there was a lack of control for low-light environments, where we could get photos without using flash. Lenses are average, generating light...

nice colours in pics,zoom 8x,quality photos,stabilizer

Feature set poor, not pleased at sites of low light without a flash generated dark photos, almost imperceptible and lacked control over ISO

"very good value for price."

good ultracompact camera for men with big hands. sharp images and video. very good low light images (without flash). quick startup time and response time to snap.

flash responses poorly in close settings. few too many mode options. burst mode can produce grainy results.

"Great camera for the price but lacking LOTS of features"

EVERY camera should have at least one mini-USB 3.0 port, and a 10Gbps Thunderbolt I/O port (with a HDMI 1.4a display adapter/cord) for computer and 1080p HDMI television connection. I'm disappointed that the camera doesn't have Full 1080p HD Video...

Easy to use, lightweight, compact, and great easy to use buttons and controls. Excellent quality photos!

No USB 3.0 so the file transfer is really slow between the computer and camera. There is no mini-HDMI 1.4a output, so you can't connect the camera to a 1080p television to view pictures or videos. No 1080p Full HD video or optical zoom recording.

"Good zoom, bad customer service"

I researched this size and style of camera and found favorable reviews online. After 6 months of routine use the display wouldn't operate as the viewfinder or mode display. I reviewed the warranty, 1 year, and found the return information. I mailed it...

The size of the camera and the picture quality were very good. The 8x zoom was impressive for the quality.

The worst customer service I have experienced. I've had various devices that develop problems and have always had good service for repairs under warranty. I would not recommend a Panasonic camera due to their disqualifying nature toward repairs.

Great, clear pics. Great zoom. Easy to use

For such a great camera and price the PLASTIC battery cover broke in 4 months. Panasonic says that "damage" voids the warranty and there's a charge for the repair ; Warning.........never by a camera with plastic parts

Product Specifications

The DMC-FH20 features a newly developed 28mm wide-angle high quality Lumix DC Vario lens with powerful 8x optical zoom (35mm camera equivalent: 28-224mm) into a slim, compact body. Comprising 9 elements in 7 groups, including 3 aspherical lenses with 6 aspherical surfaces, this advanced lens unit realizes the outstandingly slim and compact body, yet achieving exceptional optical performance. The DMC-FH20 sports a powerful 8x optical zoom lens (35mm camera equivalent: 28-224mm). This gives you highly natural expressions from people and animals that you can't get close to. And its slim, compact, pocket-sized body can easily go wherever you do - for both everyday snapshots and traveling. The extra optical zoom uses the center of the CCD to further extend the powerful 8x optical zoom when a resolution of less than 14.1-megapixel is used. This extends the zoom ratio up to 16.9x (35mm camera equivalent: 473mm) for images with 3-megapixel resolution or less. Adding the extra optical zoom to the 4x digital zoom extends the total zooming power to a maximum of 67.5x. The Sonic Speed AF system in the DMC-FH20 has a maximum speed of approx. 0.35 second for auto focusing. It includes numerous re-engineering enhancements, including a higher-speed actuator, optimized algorithms and parallel software processing. The result is fast and accurate AF performance. You can quickly get moving subjects in focus, such as when you're shooting sports scenes. The image-processing engine, Venus Engine IV, uses advanced signal processing to give you beautiful images even when the sensitivity is high. Multi-task signal processing is employed for all images to enable high-speed, high-performance shooting. Venus Engine IV also effectively raises the precision of various functions, such as MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) and Intelligent ISO Control. Along with its extremely high performance, Venus Engine IV reduces power consumption thanks to a number of energy efficiency improvements. Panasonic's advanced noise reduction system in the Venus Engine IV applies noise reduction (NR) to luminance noise and chromatic noise separately. As a result, beautiful images with minimal noise can be reproduced all the way up to ISO 1600 high sensitivity at full resolution for beautiful night shots or dimly lit indoor shots.
