Pentax Optio S5z

The Pentax Optio S5Z will tempt beginners with its under-$350 MSRP, 5-megapixel resolution, ease of fully-automatic operation, useful scene modes, and durable compact design. It trails the competition, however, with its average still image quality, poor m

Pentax Optio S5z Digital Camera Review

The Pentax Optio S5z, a 5 megapixel compact camera with a 1/2.5-inch CCD, 3x zoom, and a 2.5-inch LCD, is the smallest camera in Pentax's Optio S line at 3.3 x 2.2 x 0.8 inches and 4.2 ounces. It's also the most expensive, with an MSRP of $349.95,...

-Customizable controls -Attractive styling -Some unusual special features, including time-lapse video and image distortion -The camera body is sturdy -Icon-based Mode menu is a good alternative to a mode dial

-The manual control options are extremely limited -The front of the camera lacks grip -Small size makes it hard to hold the camera steady -Long shutter speeds are disabled in all but one mode -Battery/SD card door is flimsy.

The Optio S5z doesn't overcome the limitations inherent in such a small camera - it's hard to hold steady, the buttons are small, and the zoom is pretty short.

Pentax Optio S5i

If you're new to digital photography you may wish to read the DigitalPhotography Glossary before diving into this article (it may helpyou understand some of the terms used).

Very compact ; Incredibly light - carry anywhere without even noticing ; Excellent handling for such a small camera ; Fairly low noise at ISO 80-100, not bad at 200-400 ; High quality construction, lovely design ; Good resolution and edge-to-edge...

Slight underexposure ; Images a bit on the soft side ; Some focus problems in low light (esp. at long end of zoom) ; Default contrast a little high ; Poor shot-to-shot performance ; No AF illuminator ; Screen doesn't 'gain up' in low light ; Movie mode...

In an ever-growing sub-compact market the Optio S5i has much to recommend it; it's probably the lightest - and one of the smallest - in its class, has fast focus, no discernible shutter lag, lots of useful features and is a real joy to use. It's also...

Bottom line - the Optio S5i is a welcomed addition to the Pentax family. We feel it will make a great choice for anyone who wants an ultra-compact digicam that's durable and takes great pictures. With 5-megapixels, there 's plenty of resolution to make hi

Digital Cameras - Pentax Optio S5I Digital Camera Review, Information, Specifications

Overall, the Optio S5i is amazingly full-featured for a subcompact model, delivering good (although slightly understated) color and tone in an incredibly tiny package. If you're looking for an ultra-compact camera with a full feature set, the Optio S5i...

The Pentax S5i has a 3x zoom, 5.8-17.4mm lens, the equivalent of a 35.6-107mm lens on a 35mm camera, like its predecessor, the Optio S4i. The lens is where Pentax made a real innovation with the Optio S-series, in that its internal elements actually...

Pentax Optio S5z Digital Camera Review

The Pentax Optio S5z is the fifth generation update of the original Optio S, a stylish ultra compact brushed aluminum digital camera with 5-megapixel resolution, a 3X zoom, and a 2.5" LCD screen (and yes it's still small enough to carry around in an...

Ultra compact, 5 megapixels, 2.5" LCD Screen, very impressive noise management

The S5z is an amazing piece of cutting edge miniaturization and precision engineering and I really had fun using it. Obviously, tiny digital cameras can't be expected to compete with full sized units in terms of image quality and battery life, so...

pentax optio S5i

The Pentax Optio S5i may be compact and lightweight, but its dark, noisy images mar this otherwise promising camera.

Compact, lightweight ; live histogram ; 21 camera modes, including a fun 3-D mode ; time-lapse movie mode ; printed manual

Produces dark images with lots of noise and barrel distortion ; can't preview during exposure compensation ; slow continuous mode

The 1.8-inch LCD is somewhat dark and grainy, but the menus are easy to navigate and a live histogram helps you gauge exposure

Product Specifications

The PENTAX Optio S5i is an ultra-compact, lightweight digital camera with 5.0 effective megapixels and a 3X optical zoom lens. Its high quality aluminum alloy body and grip are textured beautifully for a sense of high design. Despite a powerful 3X optical zoom lens, the Optio S5i weighs 3.7 ounces (excluding batteries and SD memory card). A unique Sliding Lens system that allows the lens to store up and away inside the camera for the ultra-compact dimensions of 3.3x2.0x.80 inches (excluding controls and other profusions). For high-precision imaging, the Optio S5i features the power of 5.0 effective megapixels and features an smc PENTAX lens that delivers high-clarity and suppresses ghosting and flare. The primary color filter reproduces vivid, natural colors. The Optio S5i incorporates a large 1.8-inch TFT LCD monitor that offers an approximate 100% field of view with approximately 85, 000 pixels. It makes confirmation of composition or focus easy at the time of shooting and enhances image confirmation during playback. A Quick button function allows the user to designate one mode from a choice of 10 to act as a shortcut button to a selected function. By default, the Optio S5i comes with Green mode designated for the Quick button, which leaves all settings to the camera with the exception of zooming. Additional modes accessible via the Quick button include: Green mode, USER mode, Movie mode, Mode Palette, White balance, Mode memory, Resizing, Trimming, Image/voice copy, and Format. In addition to the conventionally available shooting modes, the Optio S5i features a new "Sport" mode that sets the camera for shutter speed-priority to enable spur of the moment shooting for active subjects. As with other shooting modes, the Sport mode is easy to select on the Mode palette where mode icons on the LCD monitor are displayed all at once. The easy to select option helps isolate 10 select modes from the impressive selection of 21 modes. Pan focusing ensures clear focusing from a close range to infinity, providing a better chance of capturing the action in quickly disappearing photo opportunities. The battery charger stand charges the battery inside the camera as well as spare batteries. Optio S5i users may control image playback on a TV via two optional remote controller units. Remote control F can be used to control image advance by pressing the shutter release button, while remote control E can be used to control image advance with the shutter release button, and image rewind with the zoom button.
