Pentax Optio W90 (Black)

There are a lot of rugged point-and-shoot digital camera options this year, but while most manufacturers are new to the market, Pentax is on its 11th generation with the Optio W90. The 12-megapixel camera is waterproof down to 20 feet, shockproof to 4...

Outstanding design; excellent feature set and shooting options for its class.

Short battery life; no optical or mechanical image stabilization.

The well-designed Pentax Optio W90 offers up very good photos and performance at a reasonable price for a rugged pocket camera.

Rough-and-Ready Digi-Snapper Begs for Your Abuse

A rugged cam that's not hideously ugly? Why, you're looking for the Optio W90 from Pentax.

Ruggedized without being ugly. Waterproof up to 18 feet and resistant to extremes in cold. 720p HD-video support, plus face detection plus Microscope mode gives you plenty of robust shooting options. Comes with a carabiner

Noisy images and video in low-light situations. No real whiz-bang features aside from ruggedness

Pentax Optio W90

While the Pentax Optio W90 has just been announced, I had the opportunity to get some hands-on time with a preproduction model of the new camera at CES 2010 last month. For my first impressions on the 12MP deathproof camera, keep reading.

"Complete Waste of Money"

Worst camera I have ever used. The colors are so lifeless that you wonder why you even took the camera with you. I tried taking the same picture with all of the different modes and then took the same photo with my iPhone 3 and the iPhone picture was...

Specs, price, durability.

Pretty much everything, but most importantly the picture quality is TERRIBLE!!!!!!

"Very disappointing."

I feel that the selling point that this camera is "waterproof up to 20 feet underwater" is highly misleading. I looked over my camera before taking it into the water to make sure there wasn't anything meddling with the seal, & it STILL ended up...

Where appearance is concerned, the camera manages to look rugged without being too ugly or bulky. Responded well to all commands, fairly fast shutter speed, did well in fairly wet conditions. A decent camera for average everyday use.

For 12.1 MP, the pictures it took were crisp but practically lifeless in terms of color. My phone takes better pictures! On an especially disappointing note, this "waterproof" camera ended up getting fried when I tried taking it w/ me snorkeling.

After 6 pictures it leaked @ 10 ft deep max during dive

It might be OK if you get it wet, but not if you plan to actually use it underwater.

Pictures on SD card were still OK after camera failed/leaked, but couldn't take any more. Camera was only 3 months old so Pentax replaced it under warranty with the WG-1

Leaked when used in shallow water

"Battery always dead"

The battery dies after an hour. Now I have to go through the trouble and expense of sending it to the manufacturer and they've have pretty much informed me it will be repaired at my expense. I regret buying this thing. Instead of having a camera, I...

I haven't been able to use it

This battery dies after an hour or so.
