Pentax Optio X reviewed

AnandTech has a review of Pentax's new twistable Optio X digital camera. The specs seem to hit all the right notes, 5 megapixel with a 3x optical zoom, but as you can expect with ultra-compact cameras, there are some trade offs. Resolution is below...

Printer manual ; Time-lapse movies ; Live histogram ; Exposure wanings ; Unique swivel body ; Interval timer

Awkward thumbstick control ; Dark, noisy images ; Poor video quality ; Barrel distortion ; Requires cradle to recharge and transfer pictures ; Slow continuous-shooting mode

Pentax Optio X

Offering twice the versatility in digital imaging, the PENTAX Optio X opens with just a twist of the hand and positions the lens on one side for shooting freedom and the generous LCD monitor on the other side for viewing ease. With 5.0 effective megapixel

Bottom line - the Pentax Optio X is a "cool" little camera. It may not be the fastest camera on the market, but its versatile swiveling LCD and good image quality make up for it. With 5-megapixels, there's plenty of resolution to make photo-quality 8x10-i

This 5-megapixel camera has a split body that swivels like a Rubik's Cube. But the novel design is offset by average picture quality.

Unique swivel body ; live histogram ; exposure wanings ; time-lapse movies ; interval timer ; printer manual

Dark, noisy images ; barrel distortion ; poor video quality ; awkward thumbstick control ; slow continuous-shooting mode ; requires cradle to recharge and transfer pictures

The twistable LCD is sharp and easy to read. It's also handy for self-portraits and for shooting at odd angles. There's no optical viewfinder. Menus are easy to navigate, but the controller is an awkward thumbstick. But there are some nice features; in...

Quite normal cam, use it for 1,5 year. I like that its small so i can take it anywhere with.

When using twist mech. the lcd on some positions doesnt show the real-time image, but its factory fault

Saying all that, I still give it a high ranking. For the price, it is a great value. For the digitally challenged, simple rehearsal of turning it on, and taking a photograph takes all the guess work out of taking great pictures. Remember the price!...

Extremly easy to take moving pictures with sound. The Auto Flash is great

The buttons are hard to press due to their size. The flash is good, but only within 10 feet or so

For me the best and most useful feature of the camera is Macro Focus mode. I am using this camera in my office to take pictures of the mechanical parts of my project.

There are 2 major problems ; 1. Manual Foucs. It is not easy to use ; 2. The lens sees not to be designed for 5M pictures

Product Specifications

The OptioX is a compact digital camera with a unique design that divides the body into two distinct parts. On the left side (from the user) there's the lens that can be easily revolved over a range of 180 degrees upward and 90 degrees downward according to your compositional demands. On the other side there's a large LCD monitor that can remain stable in the hand regardless of the movement of the lens side. The result? 5.0 effective megapixel clarity, 3X optical zooming and the freedom of above the head or from the hip shooting - all while confirming the composition or focus with confidence on the large, high-performance, 2.0-inch, 210, 000-pixel (approx.), low-temperature poly silicon TFT color LCD monitor.
