Ricoh Caplio R5 Review

The Ricoh Caplio R5 was announced at the end of August, just 6 months after its predecessor, the R4. New features on the Ricoh R5 include a 7 megapixel sensor, a higher resolution LCD screen,...

However, with that portability comes an almost universal frustration in the shape of a virtually ubiquitous 3x zoom lens, which fails to supply a decent wide-angle view at one end of its range or g

Bought just a refurb R5 (fw.162). Fine little cam! Yes, the zoomlever is a little bit fiddly, but the R5 is mostly well constructed, nice to handle and the IQ is quiet impressive for such a flexible lens in a small package. I love the great macro...

So far, none

Had two R3s, both of which had blurry lower left corners. After reading lots of negative as well as some very positive reviews about the R5 (and after getting a good deal) I decided to go for it and give it a try myself. I lucked out as my copy has...

Video quality is so so and can't touch the videos from my Panasonic TZ5. Videos are good enough and of high enough resolution to capture the feel of a moment but of course without coming in any way close to the quality of a dedicated video camera ; Big...

I purchased the R5 to replace my defunct Praktica Luxmedia (relatively obscure make, but very nice photos). The good things are the nice zoom range, some manual controls and the dedicated button to show the last picture taken. The menus are very easy...

After a couple of days trying this out in various situations (ranging from strong sunlight photos of the kids, through snow scenes at an indoor skiing centre to macro shots) I took the camera back to the store to change it for a Canon A series ; Even...

Seems like Ricoh took a small step back with this one. I loved the R4 and expected the R5 to be better. However, the zoom rocker is definitely not as easy to use as the R4 and I can't see any improvement on the image quality either. It's still a...

HANDLING: a bit ackward at the beginning but I got familiar to this rather quickly. MACRO: fantastic macro capabilities! BATTERY: the camera's low consumption profile helps in taking many shots before the battery runs out, however I 'd recommend a...

FLASH: effective up to 2,4 m only. With proper focusing it works properly, otherwise it overexposures. At low light it's a problem sometimes. It's position was not a problem for me ; PROGRAM FOR DOWNLOADING - EDITING IMAGES TO A PC: completely...

Image quality isn't as good as other cameras I have seen (grainy). When I turn the camera on I get inteference on the LCD screen like tv inteference. Zooming in the LCD picture is blurry (can't see what is being photographed) - have to move close to...

Product Specifications

The Caplio R5's new image-processing engine enhances your experience of macro photography. The camera's advanced macro features include 1cm macro, telemacro, zoom macro and AF Target Selection. Shutter release time lag is approximately 0.09 seconds (without focus lock engaged) and approximately 0.007 seconds from focus lock (which is engaged when the shutter button is pressed halfway down). Enhanced continuous shooting mode delivers 2.8 shots per second, and you can keep shooting high-quality images until the memory is full. Another new feature: Images can be displayed on the LCD monitor while the camera is taking pictures. You will be amazed at the Caplio R5's ease of handling. The CCD shift Vibration Correction function dramatically cuts the effects of camera shake, especially when shooting in zoom or macro. The camera's ideal compact dimensions are possible thanks to Ricoh's original Double Retracting LENS System, which fits the powerful lens inside a slim compact body. The Caplio R52s new image-processing engine, Smooth Imaging Engine II, delivers remarkably low noise images even under low light and when using high-sensitivity settings like ISO800 or ISO1600. Caplio continues to mark the higher evolution of image quality. The 2.5-inch 230,000 pixel LCD monitor offers high resolution, good visibility from wide angles and high luminance that shows images clearly even under bright lighting. Along with a metal body, the Caplio R5 offers greater precision in autofocus, automatic exposure and AWB. The camera's video capabilities have also been greatly enhanced.
