The one feature that made me buy this camera is the 28mm equivalent wide angle. This allows for far more creative composition. Other pluses include the excellent battery & camera power useage. I would normally automatically buy a spare battery to go...

The zoom has no markings on the scale. I prefer to use the zoom as several prime lenses and choose the right focal length for the picture, then compose the shot. The lack of markings makes this harder ; The lens zooms in steps & appears not to refocus...

Compact with Wide Lens... Good speed of operation, fairly good picture quality for 4x6 prints. A good tradeoff of compact size and wide lens vs. image quality @ 100%. Great travel / backup camera. Fantastic macro capability. Quick access to ISO, EV...

Noise at higher ISO settings - not a problem if printing @ 4x6" but noticeable at ; 100%. Blades protecting lens are flimsy. Needs exposure compensation in bright sun ; to avoid blown highlights - as does flash at close range in the dark (perhaps a ;...

Very few 28mm cameras in this price bracket, let alone ones that optically zoom out to 200mm. Very small and more importantly lightweight. Easy to use with more features than you might expect for such a low cost camera. Basically does exactly what you...

Supplied software is very frustrating if you want to burn a VCD of a slideshow (I've still not got this to work). Otherwise base software gets images from camera to PC OK but does nothing else. Lightness and smallness can be a handling proble, I...

Ricoh Caplio R30 review

Wide-angle and teleconverters are available for compact cameras, but they're usually a poor substitute for a good optical zoom range - which happens to be the Caplio R30's strongest point.

Good otical zoom range ; Excellent finish ; 26MB of internal memory

Poor image quality ; High image noise ; Colour rendition not even accurate

Ricoh isn't one of the best-known names in digital photography, but it has a good track record for value. The R30 is a decent example.

Shake issues aside, this is an impressive camera - we liked its macro and wide-angle features. The Caplio R30 is easy to get to grips with and has plenty of onscreen customisation and information about settings.

Ricoh Caplio R30

While it may not have a single standout feature, the R30 is a solid performer in a crowded 5 megapixel digital camera market.

Small enough to carry around in your pocket ; Customisable LCD screen ; 5.7x optical zoom lens ; High sensitivity and skew correction modes ; Good battery life ; Controls consistent with those of past Ricoh models

No support for USB 2.0 ; Full-press auto mode yields blurry images

Being familiar with some past Ricoh models, it's also noticeable that not a great deal has changed on the Ricoh LCD interface over the last year or two. While some might interpret that as a lack of innovation, we see it as a case of 'if it ain't broke,...

Ricoh announced today the launch of the Caplio R30 compact digital camera featuring a 5.7x optical wide zoom (28-160 mm in 35 mm camera format) in a trim body only 26mm thick. The new Ricoh Caplio R30 is positioned as a more affordable version of the...

Ricoh doesn't believe a decent optical zoom should compromise the pocketability of its digital cameras.

This camera takes good-quality shots, has a powerful zoom and is reasonably easy to point and shoot with.
