Ricoh Caplio R8

Ricoh is a camera manufacturer that tends to swim against the stream, not only in terms of product range but also in the way it schedules its product announcements. While all the big boys announced their new toys just before or right at PMA in Las...

Very compact body for the zoom range ; Good lens with a very versatile zoom range ; Sharp and detailed results at low ISO (although some artifacts visible 'up close') ; Effective macro mode ; Good responsiveness and overall speed (although focus slows...

Very slow focus and focus hunting in low light ; Face Detection unreliable and only available as a shooting mode ; Ineffective image stabilization system, not available in movie mode ; Zoom and focus pretty noisy ; White balance under artificial light...

I can honestly say that I very much enjoyed using the Ricoh R8 while working on this review but I'll also quote Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who once wrote: 'There is strong shadow where there is much light'. So, if you are thinking about purchasing an...

Ricoh R8 Review

The Ricoh R8 is the latest version in Ricoh's regularly updated series of 7x zoom digital cameras. Offering the same versatile 28-200mm focal length as its predecessor, the most significant change to the new R8 is the increase from 8 to 10 megapixels....

Ricoh have set out to make the new R8 a worthy addition to its professional range of compact digital cameras. Both the consumer Caplio branding and slightly awkward design of its predecessor have been dropped, replaced with a much more serious,...

Good photo quality for smaller-sized prints ; Great 28 - 200 mm zoom range; minimum barrel distortion ; Sensor-shift image stabilization ; Stylish, well built metal body ; Stunning, ultra high resolution LCD display ; Some manual controls ; Decent...

Overprocessed images with noise, noise reduction / sharpening artifacts; banding at higher ISOs ; Redeye a problem ; White balance struggles under unusual lighting conditions ; Low light focusing could be better ; Lens is slow at the wide-angle end ;...

Want a 28 - 200 mm zoom lens and don't take a lot of photos with the flash, or in unusual lighting? Then the Ricoh R8 is worth a look. If you're willing to give up that lens and the super LCD, I think there are better options out there.

Ricoh R8 Review at Trusted Reviews

The Ricoh R8 is an expensive camera, but it does offer a unique specification and very distinctive style. Build quality is superb, and the design of the body and control interface makes it a real pleasure to use.

Nice piece of equipment, well built. Serves as an addition to my Canon G9 and replaces my old Ricoh R3. Got it on Ebay for 120 euro. What I still like: 1. 28-200 zoom and a real usefull macro 2. fast responsiviness and write times 3. superb menu...

What I dislike ; 1. I sense some white-balance problems at low light, manual adjustment though is just two buttons away. At first sight (I have the camera for a week now, so only 800 shots :-) ) I do not like the skin-tone produced by the camera, or it...

I bought this on impulse because of the price £130 and the features. I liked the size of the camera, the long wide angle zoom, and the design of the camera. It all looked promising. When I got home I charged the battery and read the manual. Then I...

Average picture for a good well designed camera

Wow! This is extremely well construction camera, just the feel of it in your hands confirms this, a useful hand grip and two point neck strap option. Features, well is all here as far as I am concerned, 1 cm macro, 460K LCD, smooth and silent 7x...

Flash range could be better, average when compared to other compacts in its class. No optical view-finder but the hi resolution LCD makes up for this.

This camera is pretty and compact, with lots of features and a simple interface ... but the image quality is not very good.

The high resolution images are really noisy at 100 ISO. The finest JPEG compression isn't very fine at all. You'll have to reduce the 10MP image to 7MP or so to make it look clean.
