Samsung HZ25W (WB5000)

The sensors in these cameras are considerably smaller than you will find in a DSLR or mirrorless interchangeable lens model. One of the advantages of a smaller sensor is that, compared to an SLR, you need a physically much smaller lens. As you can see...

The Samsung HZ25W 12.5MP camera with 24x Mega-Zoom

Recent developments in the digital camera market have given amateur photographers that require a decent optical zoom some reasonably priced point-and-shoot alternatives. Following announcements earlier this year by Kodak and Olympus, Samsung has...

The integrated Schneider-Kreuznach lens has a 26mm wide-angle focal length and in addition to taking photos can record 720p HD video using the high definition H.264 codec. Other noteworthy features include optical and digital image stabilization to...

Samsung WB5000 review

Not to be confused with the WB500 pocket camera from the same manufacturer, with the extra "0" in the WB5000's model number comes an extensive, all encompassing focal range equivalent to 26-624mm in 35mm film terms, or a 24x optical zoom.

Easy to use "high zoom" model that extends creative framing possibilities into (almost) the realm of the paparazzi, one touch video record button, optical zoom accessible when recording movie clips

Other manufacturers offer zooms up to 30x, though of course for slightly more money, some operational noise of the lens picked up by the microphone when zooming during filming

The Samsung WB5000 is an undemanding tool for those who want a greater lens reach than a more compact camera will allow, without the expense, weight and bulk of equipping a digital SLR with anything approaching its 24x equivalent optical range

Samsung WB5000

Samsung's first super-zoom features HD video and stereo sound

, with a large lens barrel and a rubberised SLR-style handgrip. The body is surprisingly slim and quite light, over 100g lighter than the SX10 IS, and within a few millimetres and a few grams of being the same size and weight as the FZ38. The build...

Samsung WB5000 review

The 12.5Mp Samsung WB5000's snug DSLR shape echoes Samsung's NX10 hybrid camera for looks and feels comfortably lightweight in the palm.

With rugged DSLR-like handling, yet easy to use the Samsung WB5000 is a compact camera with 24x zoom; one-touch video recording and a zoom that's accessible even when filming movies. The operational sound of the zoom is picked up during video...

Samsung WB5000 review

Samsung hasn't made an ultra-zoom camera since 2005's impressive but bizarre Pro815. This time around, the design is far more conventional, blending in with the likes of the Panasonic FZ38 Panasonic FZ38.

An extremely capable camera with some great features, but significantly slower than the very similar Panasonic FZ38

Samsung WB5000 review

Chasing a bigger slice of the digital-camera market, Samsung's added a long-range superzoom to its range. But the WB5000 doesn't really add anything to this sector that other makers haven't done already, and it's not the cheapest device of its type,...

24x zoom range ; Very good LCD display ; Can shoot raw files

Weak continuous-shooting performance ; Image stabiliser isn't that effective ; Average definition

Conclusion The Samsung WB5000 is a pretty average superzoom. Perhaps its biggest problem at the moment is that its main rivals, like the Nikon Coolpix P90 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ38, are a good deal cheaper and, it has to be said, slightly better...

Samsung WB5000

With the introduction of the WB5000, it's no secret that consumer electronics giant Samsung wants a piece of the lucrative superzoom market. It has dabbled before with the high-end Pro 815 (see MacUser, 17 February 2006, p36), but it wasn't much...

Ultimately though, there are no real stand-out features or performance gains over rivals, making it difficult to recommend the WB5000

Samsung WB5000

Designed to appeal to beginners and enthusiasts alike, with its all-rounder 24x zoom, full manual control and HD video recording.

In typical Samsung style, the WB5000 is packed with intelligent user-friendly features and impressive specifications. Unfortunately, the image quality and general performance of this new model are disappointing. Samsung is trying to appeal to both...
