Samsung Pro815

Decent image quality. Longest zoom and biggest LCD for a fixed-lens point-and-shoot digital camera. Wide-angle end of the zoom range reaches 28mm. Includes manual-focus ring. Lots of options.

Some shutter lag in non-flash situations. Big and bulky. No image stabilization. Limited to 30-second video clips.

Samsung seems to have a hit-or-miss approach when it comes to the Pro815, which is why this superzoom and enthusiast camera didn't score higher.

The $700 (as of August 25, 2006) Samsung Pro815 is a dream camera for serious photographers. This bulky 8-megapixel camera looks like a digital SLR and packs a multitude of features and settings for the ultimate in control over your pictures.

Huge 3.5-inch LCD and 15X zoom ; Tons of manual controls

Lacks image stabilization

Pro815 lives up to its name, with many controls, a huge 3.5-inch LCD, and massive 15X zoom. No image stabilization, though.

Samsung Pro815

Samsung officially announced its first SLR-styled digital camera, the Pro815, an 8 megapixel, 15x zoom model back in June, but it didn't actually arrive until the late autumn. It's targeted at enthusiasts and boasts a lot of 'world firsts' including...

Huge 28-420mm equivalent zoom range with mechanical zoom ring ; Excellent edge-to-edge results across the zoom range ; Good resolution - especially in raw mode ; Fairly light-handed noise reduction at higher ISO settings ; Large, bright 3.5-inch screen...

Long shutter lag ; Focusing can feel slow ; 640 x 480 movies at 25 fps maximum clip length of 30 secs ; Focus hunts - and often fails - at long end of zoom, especially in low light ; JPEG processing doesn't make the most of the lens, smearing of low...

Samsung has arrived at the super zoom / bridge camera party very late, but it has certainly made quite an entrance. The Pro815's designers obviously decided that the key to success was to take the successful formula established by the likes of...

8MP and 15x optical zoom, built-in pop-up flash, low-noise processing algorithm, and the fastest response times in its class (shot-to-shot speeds have been reduced to 1.0 second and 1.3 second respectively; shutter release lag of 0.05 seconds) plus...

Samsung Pro815 Pro Review

The Pro 815 is the first Samsung digital camera I've had the chance to use, and I'm frankly amazed at what this baby can do. I carried it around in my briefcase and tried it in distinctly different settings. I took it to restaurants, medical...

Huge 3.5-inch, 235K rear-panel LCD display, 1.4-inch top panel LCD for waist viewing, Kitchen sink of photo features, Close "Super-Macro" Setting, Ultra-sharp 28-420mm Schneider (35mm equivalent) zoom lens, High Speed Shutter Mode, Diopter adjustment...

No optical viewfinder, No image stabilization, Small sensor which yields high noise levels over ISO 200, Poorly organized manual without index, Slow learning curve, Complicated menu and controls, As big and bulky as a pro dSLR, Ultra slow auto focus at...

Once I mastered it, I was able to give the Samsung Pro815 a hearty thumbs-up. I love the big, sharp, telephoto zoom lens and the huge rear-panel LCD. The Pro815 provides many of the tools I require in an all-in-one, super-zoom digital camera: easy...

Samsung's Digimax Pro815; Not For Pros, But For Everyone

Samsung's Digimax Pro815 features several digital camera firsts, including the world's longest optical zoom lens-and it's a Schneider, too-and the largest LCD preview screen. It's all wrapped up in a Mad Max-design that looks like a digital SLR, except...

The Pro815 can also be connected to an external monitor or TV set for image playback. Its PictBridge technology lets you connect the camera (using the supplied USB cable) directly to a printer and output images from the camera's 64MB internal memory or...

DigitalCameraRoundup.com - Samsung Pro815

The difference being that SLRs use a movable mirror which lets the photographer look directly through the lens and thus see precisely what the lens will capture whereas SLR-style cameras do not have such a mirror system. "Real" SLRs have replaceable...

Huge 3.5-inch primary LCD makes camera a pleasure to use, Excellent 28-420 mm provides wide angle to massive zoom, Very powerful battery lasts a long time, Secondary LCD on top allows hip-level shooting, Excellent hi-res electronic viewfinder, Stereo...

No true image stabilization, Only goes up to ISO 800, Needlessly sparse menus, almost no online help, Button labeling hard to see, Included software marginal, Large and heavy

Overall, this is a very nice effort by Samsung. The excellent lens and huge screen alone make the Pro815 a powerful alternative to a low-end dSLR

Like other cameras of its kind, the Samsung Pro815 is often mistaken for a digital SLR.

Product Specifications

The Pro 815 enables you to handle any shooting condition and situation, and demonstrates all the technologies of Samsung Techwin, the leading camera manufacturer in Korea. The release of the Pro 815 provides evidence that Korean digital camera designs are equivalent to or better than Japan's in terms of technology. The Pro 815 employs the world's best 15x optical zoom, the world's largest 3.5 inch LCD, the world's first top LCD, and a Li-Ion battery with the world's largest capacity. The 15x optical zoom of the Pro 815 realizes the all-in-one concept of a digital camera. From the analog era to the digital era, it can be said that the performance of a camera depends on the expression of an image via its lens. In the transition from SLR in the analog era to DSLR in the digital era, camera user trends are also changing, and advanced digital cameras are being developed from normal digital cameras. During this process, users buy an interchangeable lens whose angle of view is different due to the limitations of expressing images via a lens. That is very inconvenient when you take pictures. The 15x optical zoom function of the Pro 815 is equivalent to the 28mm ~ 420mm in 35mm format, and includes the 28~85mm (wide angle zoom lens) and the 80~400mm (telephoto zoom lens) that DSLR users usually enjoy. In addition, the application of the world-beating Schneider lens enables you to achieve clear and natural-looking images with high resolution. Thus, with the Pro 815, you can overcome the limitations of expressing images via a lens. The Pro 815 provides various display modes via the 3.5-inch LCD. Existing digital cameras enable you to combine 9 different shots in the LCD when playing images, but the Pro 815 enables you to combine 25 different shots. In addition, you can search desired images more quickly via a jog dial. The Pro 815 supports a Histogram function that allows you to check and control exposure compensation conveniently. A grid display that facilitates changing shooting angles is available. In particular, you can get the optimized shooting angle and mode by checking image information just prior to shooting, displaying an image in the center with icons and image information around the margins.
