Samsung TL500

The Samsung TL500 has an attractive design and a bright flip-and-twist display.

Some irritating control placements, inconsistent photo quality, and an uninspiring feature set tarnish the TL500's appeal.

Less than the sum of its parts, the Samsung TL500 is a solid camera, but it just can't keep up with veteran players in the competitive enthusiast compact market.

Samsung TL500

The Samsung TL500's spec list reads like an all-star team recruited from other advanced point-and-shoot cameras' more enticing qualities. Like the Canon PowerShot G12, it comes equipped with a flip-and-rotate screen to help with odd-angle shots. Like...

Excellent dual-image stabilization ; In-camera retouching for RAW images ; Solid image quality ; Beautiful tilt-and-swivel OLED screen ; Ultra-wide-angle lens with F1.8 maximum aperture

Menu and controls can be unintuitive ; Poor video resolution and quality ; Battery must be charged in the camera ; Macro mode isn't as effective as competing cameras

The Samsung TL500 has some drool-worthy specs and shoots great photos, but it stumbles on usability and video quality.

Samsung TL500/EX1 Review

Samsung has put together a worthy competitor in the "compact prosumer" category. It offers image quality and High ISO performance that is matched by few cameras of the same size, however you pay a hefty price for these performance results and features....

Excellent build quality ; Intuitive control layout ; High quality 3x optical zoom with a fast f/1.8 max. aperture ; Captures beautiful 10-megapixel still photos ; Robust shooting performance ; Awesome 3.0-inch, rotating AMOLED display ; Excellent High...

No HD video capture option ; Weak built-in flash ; Auto WB setting wasn't always accurate ; No A/V cable included ; Battery charges in the camera, which means you can't charge a secondary pack while using the camera

Samsung TL500/EX1 Review

As DSLRs have become less expensive, the number of people keen to buy high-end, manually controllable compact cameras has fallen away - so long as camera size isn't an issue, the benefits of a larger sensor are hard to resist. However, because size is...

Good image quality, particularly at lower ISO settings ; Extremely bright F1.8-2.4 lens ; Useful 24mm equiv. wide angle ; High ISO performance good up to ISO 800 (and higher if processed from RAW) ; Accessible, quick-to-use manual controls ; Superb...

Highlight clipping and channel clipping in bright, high-contrast conditions ; Unpredictable metering requires regular use of exposure compensation ; No control over noise reduction (which is excessive at high ISO settings) ; Video limited to VGA...

The TL500 / EX1 is a very capable and well-featured photographers' compact camera. Its excellent (and articulated) OLED screen helps distinguish it from the conceptually similar Panasonic LX3. Overall it's among the best compact cameras available if...

Samsung TL500 First Impressions Digital Camera Review

The TL500 is not a small camera, measuring 4.5 by 2.5 by 1.14 inches. That means it is too big to fit comfortably into a jeans pocket, but it is small enough to fit into a coat pocket or small bag. Front

The TL500 is a very promising camera that looks like it will be a good pick for those who want a camera they can control, but who don't want to lug around an SLR. It has a great set of controls and features, including a full manual mode that is...

Sharp images. Great low light performance. Articulating high-resolution OLED display. Micro-HDMI port

Bulky. Expensive. No high-definition video capture. Noticeable shutter lag. Proprietary USB port

Samsung TL500 Review

Samsung elbowed its way into the advanced compact category when it launched the TL500 almost a year ago.

Good image quality ; Low noise levels to ISO 800 ; Intuitive controls

No HD video ; Costly ; No quick access to EV compensation

The TL500 is a more than worthy competitor in the "compact prosumer point-and-shoot" marketing niche. If I were buying a digital camera today, the TL500 would be in the top spot on my short list.

Samsung EX1/TL500 f/1.8-2.4 10.0 Megapixel Digital Camera

I'm sure I'm not the only photography enthusiast that has run into this problem. It's nice to always carry a camera around with you but when it is a ...

Image quality is excellent ; f1.8-2.4 is nice and bright, seldom seen on any compact camera ; 24mm wide angle ; Low noise up to ISO 800 ; Great articulated rear OLED screen ; Shoots in RAW, lots of control ; Good battery life

A little expensive ; Only shoots video in VGA, no HD option ; Mostly useless flash ; Dual stabilization option is limited ; Front dial isn't ideally placed ; Manual focus is almost unusable

Despite being lightweight, the EX1 looks and feels well built. The pieces look well fitted. The LCD screen is thin and swivels but doesn't feel flimsy. Even the very small flap door that covers the HDMI and battery charging ports opens and shuts...

Samsung EX1

The photography market is now dominated by interchangeable lens cameras, but Samsung intends to boost the fixed-lens prosumer market with the EX1. Will its small size compromise its expectations from professionals? Read on to find out!

Solid build quality ; 10 megapixel high resolution sensor ; Optical image stabilization ; Bright and sharp OLED swivel screen ; RAW file format and great RAW software

External lens cap ; Awkward positioning of main dial

The Samsung EX1 has definitely made quite the entrance into the prosumer camera market. With an extremely bright lens, solid build quality, and image quality to boot, the EX1 is definitely a good choice for a professional looking for a compact, and...

Samsung TL500

There's a lot to like, especially for serious shooters, but there are some notable absences

Very sharp images; Plenty of controls

Only 3x zoom; No high def video

There is a lot to like with the TL500: serious shooters will love the f/1.8 lens, the full manual control and the rotating OLED screen. But there are also a few things missing, such as high def movie capture and the sleek looks of many other compact...
