Sanyo Xacti VPC-E1

The E1 shoots TV-quality MPEG-4 video and utilizes the state-of-the-art Advanced Video Codec AVC/H.264. Incorporating a special Qpixel brand H.264 chipset, the E1 delivers a significant 25 percent reduction in video file size, along with improved video...

Improved 9 pixel-mixing technology allows video to be shot even in darker places, such as indoors during a party. When using the "Automatic" setting, subjects may be recorded in light as low as 7 lux, and when using the "Lamp Mode" setting found in the...

Sanyo Xacti E1

Sanyo's Xacti E1 is an excellent flash-based camcorder that's also waterproof.

Sleek and durable design ; Sharp video and still images ; Waterproof to 5 feet ; Submersible microphone

LCD washes out in a bit bright sunlight ; Doesn't float

Sanyo Xacti VPC-E1 (blue)

So right out of the gate, the E1 faces both an identity crisis and the challenge of distinguishing itself from better-equipped veterans. Unfortunately, it's not really up to the task. On one hand, the vertical design makes for a solid single-handed...

Frequently captures surprisingly high-quality still photos; waterproof

Awkward, frustrating design; slow focus

If underwater YouTubing were a market segment, the Sanyo Xacti VPC-E1 would be the camera to get. But the awkward design and slow performance make it hard to recommend for landlubbers.

SANYO Xacti E1

World's first waterproof camcorder takes both underwater video and 6 megapixel still photos above or below water

"Good camera"

It is nice to have a camera that can be used for both video and still photos as well as being small

My battery charger broke down after using only a few times. I called Sanyo asking for a free replacement since it had broken in less than a year. They said since it was an accessory, it was not under warranty so I would have to buy a new one.

"Underwarter Video-How fun is this?????"

Sliding down the water slide giggling like a little kids on tape is woth ever cent. Good video quality underwater too.

Easy to use. Had had many camcorders but this is by far the most fun for the whole family!

Quality of the pictures are not that hi res. Can't figure out how to put the camcorder light on.

"Don't buy if you're interested in VIDEO function."

1. I had my camera just over 3 months (just outside of warranty) and it freaked out electronically. It won't record audio with the video, the picture on the screen flips itself randomly during filming or picture taking, which makes following a subject...

I've gotten some surprisingly good quality pictures, nice to be able to flip the screen to take self portraits.

electronic malfunction, video quality, awkward grip which impacts video quality, slow focus, zoom function can be heard in movies, zoom button isn't sensitive, no lens cover, picture re-frames when you press shutter button, etc. . .

Fun camera that's good for what it is.

I bought this during the summer of 2007. I actually love this camera, even with its short comings, which are basically accurately described in CNET's review. I happen to like the grip position, as has friends and family who have tried it (and since...

Nice size, convenient (though unorthodox) grip, very good for outdoor use. A blast for use at waterparks and at the beach. Easy to transfer videos to computer

Slow response with video record button; not great in low light. Taking still while recording video causes hiccup in video
