Mediocre image quality

There's no Memory Stick bundled in the box with the DSC-H1, but you can store up to 12 shots at the camera's highest resolution in its 32MB of built-in memory. In our battery tests, we took 306 shots between charges--an impressive total for a camera...

Good picture quality. Fairly good video capabilities. Quick boot-up. Large LCD screen.

Flash is too powerful in auto mode. Significant shutter lag with flash shots.

Except for shutter lag and an overly powerful flash, this 12X superzoom has some fine features.

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-H1

Mega zoom digital cameras are all the rage this season. Panasonic paved the way with its 12x optical zoom Lumix models, and other manufacturers quickly charged in to feed Americans' desires for potent digicams that offer a wide range of focal lengths...

High quality 12x optical zoom; good image stabilization

Poor software; uses expensive Memory Stick Pro media; low quality LCD screen

the DSC-H1 is a worthy competitor in the mega zoom ranks.

12X image-stabilized zoom; 2.5-inch LCD; speedy performance; full feature set; nice selection of accessories.

Slightly soft images; lack of fine detail; larger and heavier than the competition.

This is a capable megazoom camera that can hold its own against much of the competition.

Sony DSC-H1

Introduced in February 2005 (pre-PMA), the Cyber-shot H1 is Sony's attempt to win a share of one of the fastest growing digital camera market sectors, the 5 megapixel 'super zoom'. Although Sony has produced big zoom cameras before (the F828 and its...

Good resolution, good edge-to-edge detail, Great color, good exposure, Accurate and fast focus, Low shutter lag, Superb handling, comprehensive photographic controls, Jog dial makes manual / semi-automatic exposure very easy and fast, 12x zoom offers...

Slight overall softness when viewed at 100%, Some focus hunting at long end of the zoom (especially in movie mode), Image stabilization doesn't seem quite as effective as competition, Small (though bright and clear) viewfinder, High default contrast...

Considering this is Sony's first foray into the increasingly crowded - and competitive - 5MP 'super zoom', whereas other manufacturers are already into their second or third generation models, the DSC-H1 is a very impressive, very mature product indeed.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1 First Impressions Review

Sony decided to up the ante this year and transform their line, entering the "ultra zoom" race with the release of a long-lens Cyber-shot digital camera. The resulting 5.1 megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1 has a 12x optical zoom lens, equating to a...

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1 does have some incredibly attractive features, notably its 12x optical zoom lens with super image stabilization and large 2.5-inch LCD screen. The 36-432mm (equivalent) variable focal range lens is also compatible with...

Product Specifications

A five megapixel, Super HAD CCD imager, 12X optical zoom lens and a large 2.5-inch LCD are just a few of the features on this model that are sure to please even the choosiest photo buff. With a focal length range of 36 - 432 millimeters (a 35mm equivalence) the DSC-H1 camera lets you frame distant objects with ease. Making the most of this telephoto reach, Sony's Super Steady Shot optical image stabilization feature counteracts camera-shake to ensure sharp images. This feature also benefits low-light photography by allowing the use of longer shutter speeds with reduced risk of image blur from camera-shake. Sony's Real Imaging Processor circuitry is incorporated in the model for better battery efficiency, more responsiveness and high quality movie taking, while seven preset scene modes allow quick selection of the best setting for specific shooting conditions. The camera also includes a five-area, multi-point auto focus to help you concentrate on the subject without mistakenly focusing on the background, as well as aperture/shutter priority and manual exposure modes for creative control of the image. For added convenience, the model has 32 MB of internal memory (30 MB of usable memory) and a Memory Stick flash media slot. PictBridge compatibility enables prints in a flash when the camera is connected to an enabled printer.
