Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H50 (Black)

Sitting atop Sony's line of megazoom cameras is the 9-megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-H50. Its 15x f2.7-f8 31-465mm-equivalent lens, coupled with the company's SteadyShot optical image stabilization, lets you shoot far and somewhat wide. It's also built...

Versatile mix of ease-of-use features and manual controls; tilting 3-inch LCD; good color reproduction; zoom operates in movie mode.

Slowish startup and shutdown; occasional fringing, noise issues; no raw support or hot shoe.

Though its lens isn't as wide and suffers from many of the same lens artifacts as its competitors, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H50 is a good megazoom camera with a lot of features for experiment-minded snapshooters.

Sony DSC-H50

The new Sony Cybershot H50 uses a powerful Carl Zeiss 15x optical zoom lens with Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization to capture action at a distance. The lens yields sharp, high-contrast images and reduces color fringing, even when shooting in...

The camera also features a large, 3-inch tilting LCD screen so you can shoot comfortably from nearly any position, at low and high angles. Its scratch-resistant, UV hard-coat finish adds a premium look and feel that mirrors the performance of the model

Cybershot DSC-H50

Sony's new Cyber-shot DSC-H50 has some outstanding features. But it also has a few kinks that may or may not hang you up, depending on how picky you are about certain functions.

Powerful 15x optical zoom Tilting 3-inch LCD screen

Slow startup speed Short battery life

But the DSC-H50 has some shortcomings. The LCD produces a somewhat jumpy image when panning, which I found irksome. Battery life is less than ideal: Our lab tests yielded 291 shots on a charge; in the field, it was noticeably short. While most of the...

Sony Cybershot DSC-H50 Review

I received the Sony Cybershot DSC-H50 the day before I left for a week-long road trip through the Southwest. I only had time for a cursory review of the manual before I was off and shooting. I had a few challenges with the camera, but considering my...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H50 Review

A 15x zoom, an innovative tilting LCD, excellent performance, and mini-DSLR styling.

When we applied low and high noise reduction to ISO 800, Ithought the low NR version was a bit better, but found just the opposite truefor ISO 1600. I was back to low NR when things got to ISO 3200.

Sony Cybershot DSC-H50

Besides the "super thin keep in your pocket/purse all the time model of compact digital cameras" there seems to be a new kid on the block nowadays, the superzoom. Such is Sony's DSC-H50 (available in chrome or black finish).

With a retail price of $399 the Sony Cybershot DSC-H50 makes for a must have camera for those who often need a longer range zoom but don't want to carry around the bulk of the standard DSLR type of camera
