Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX50V review

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX50V combines two things a lot of people are after in a compact camera: a pocketable body and a long zoom lens.

Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-HX50V is the smallest, lightest camera with a 30x zoom. It has a large assortment of shooting options, direct control over exposure compensation, and excellent photo and video quality for its class. A Multi Interface Shoe lets you...

Despite the additional manual controls and Multi Interface Shoe, the HX50 lacks a couple of things enthusiasts value: a large sensor and raw capture. The flash, mic, and viewfinder accessories are expensive. A slow lens limits its usefulness indoors.

Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-HX50V is an excellent compact megazoom suitable for snapshooters and enthusiasts, though the latter might be turned off by some aspects of the camera.

Sony DSC-HX50V ( Black)

Granted, "pocketable" is a bit of a stretch for a camera that measures 4.4 inches wide by 2.6 inches high by 1.6 inches deep, and weighs approximately 9.6 ounces. On the other hand, similar cameras around this size don't have a 30x, f3.5-6.3, 24-720mm...

Sony HX50V Review

Apparently the pocketable Sony HX30V long-zoom digital camera and the DSLR-like Sony HX200V bridge camera have had a love child. The new Sony HX50V carries some excellent DNA from both "parents," packing a 30x optical zoom lens like the HX200V into a...

Sony Cyber-shot HX50V - High Zoom, High Stamina Superzoom

Going on a holiday? You might want to consider a superzoom compact instead of a bulky DSLR camera. We narrow down your choices by taking a look at the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX50V. It is Sony's latest superzoom compact which serves up 30x optical zoom in...

30x optical zoom ; Has multi-interface shoe mount ; Good image stabilization

A bit on the chunky side ; Very basic Wi-Fi features ; Rear display is not touch sensitive ; Display washes out under bright sunlight, more so than other competing models ; Expensive

The Sony HX50V is definitely one of the better travel compacts, with a 30x optical zoom housed inside a relatively compact body. Its image stabilization is also top-notch, with the hot shoe mount providing more options to users (though we feel it’s...

The Sony HX50V is the worlds smallest, lightest camera with a 30x optical zoom. It packs a lens with a 35mm equivalent range of 24 - 720mm into a compact camera that is just about pocketable. The main attraction of a compact super-zoom is it's zoom...

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX50V Review

I’ve had lots of experience with these mega zoom cameras: some enjoyable, some not so much.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX50V camera

This super-compact camera has a 30x zoom, Wi-Fi, and GPS

Compact design ; Excellent GPS and Wi-Fi ; Good video, photos in good lighting

Noisy shots in dim, dark lighting ; Heavy noise reduction past ISO 400 ; No RAW photo mode

If you were looking for a travel-zoom camera in the past, we’d have gone straight to recommending a Panasonic. Sony’s new HX50V crams 20 megapixels -- too many, really -- on its tiny sensor, with a 30x zoom lens and all the trimmings you could want....
