Sony DSC-L1

Supplied accessories may differ in each country or area

Very compact, Useful 32-96mm equiv. zoom range, Excellent build quality and finish, Very fast operation, Fast, accurate focus, Clean results, decent resolution for this class of camera, Low noise, Well designed, easy to use interface, Good auto white...

Memory Stick Duo cards not that common, and quite pricey, Highest quality setting is a little over compressed, Stupid tripod mount needs bulky adaptor, Design makes accidentally activating spot metering easy, Mediocre macro capability, Underpowered...

Another month, another cute, easy to use and reliable Sony point-and-shoot camera.

Sony Cyber Shot DSC-L1 (blue)

About the size and shape of a Three Musketeers bar at 3.7 by 1.7 by 1.1 inches, the 5.5-ounce Cyber Shot DSC-L1 fits in any pocket. If you want to use a tripod--which is unlikely if you're considering this camera--you'll also need to carry its separate...

Slick design and finish; available in four colors; quick performance; ultracompact; excellent battery life; wide-angle view; easy operation.

Subpar image quality, small LCD viewfinder; limited controls.

Quick performance and style only partially compensate for this compact shooter's mediocre image quality and limited LCD viewfinder.

Sony Cybershot DSC-L1 Digital Camera Camera

The 4.1-megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-L1 looks slick and performs well, even though its tiny buttons and sharp joystick aren't the most comfortable to use.

In our image-quality tests, this camera produced bright, vibrant color in our outdoor and still-life shots, yet its sharpness wasn't the best. Portions of our black-and-white test pattern were blurry and showed some color distortion. At least one test...

Sony DSC-L1

The Sony CyberShot DSC-L1 packs a 4.1-megapixel imager, 3X-optical zoom lens into a stylish little package just smaller than a candy bar. Measuring just 3.7" x 1.7" x 1.1" (95 x 44.3 x 25.7mm), the L1 is powered by a InfoLithium battery pack, and...

Bottom line - the Sony Cyber-shot L1 is a definite winner. It will make a great choice for anyone who wants an affordable "pocket-rocket" that captures pleasing images. With 4- megapixels, you can create photo-quality 8x10-inch or larger prints. Retailing

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-L1

This review has been completed using a production model DSC-L1. Product shots have been reshot where necessary, and all sample photos are from the production camera

Ultra-compact, stylish metal body; comes in four colors ; Robust performance ; LCD usable in bright and dim light ; AF-assist lamp; good low light focusing ; Very good movie mode ; Live histogram in record mode ; USB 2.0 High Speed supported ;...

Images seem soft and muddy; some vignetting ; Weak flash ; Redeye ; No optical viewfinder or video out port ; No manual controls or macro mode ; Buttons are pretty tiny, as is the LCD display ; Software bundle isn't great, though the tutorial is helpful

If you want a camera that you can take anywhere, and don't plan on making large prints, I do recommend the DSC-L1. If you want more control over your camera's settings, better photo quality, or expandability, you'll probably have to buy a larger camera.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-L1

The camera is very compact, even for today's standards. The battery is powerful which, together with the quality of the camera's electronics, enables fast recording of the shots. The video in fine mode is very good for the average end-user. I think the...

After a year the lens cover got stuck and wouldn't retract, rendering the camera useless, even though the rest was in perfect conditions. I opened it up on my own, and I documented the procedure on my blog ;...

Product Specifications

Measuring 3 3/4" x 1 3/4" x 1 Cyber-shot DSC-L1 camera is powered by Sony's Real Imaging Processor circuitry, delivering outstanding shot-to-shot speed, stamina and quick start-up time for catching the action as soon as it happens. For the first time in the ultra-compact class of digital cameras, the Cyber-shot L1 model delivers a 1.5-inch transflective LCD, making it easier to see what's on the LCD even in bright sunlight. It also has a new Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 3X optical zoom lens, setting the stage for picture quality typically delivered by larger, more expensive digital cameras. Like all Cyber-shot cameras, the DSC-L1 model has speedy auto-focus and auto-exposure options to snap the best picture the first time. You can quickly select the best setting based on the shooting conditions by choosing from one of seven preset modes, including twilight, snow, beach and fireworks. Four newly developed technologies - including a linear focus drive and a compact high-resolution optical system - combine to produce the ultra-small lens. This lets you zoom in for crisp images of a flower or zoom out for a far-away shot of the game-winning goal, all the while staying in sharp focus. When used with Memory Stick PRO Duo media, the L1 camera's high-quality MPEG Movie VX Fine mode captures and plays back high-resolution moving images with 640x480 pixel resolution at 30 frames per second, up to the capacity of the memory media card. The L1 camera provides approximately 240 shots per charge of the InfoLithium battery, with a to-the-minute, on-screen display of remaining battery life.
