Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T5 Digital Camera Review

At the beginning of the year, Sony announced that it would release its new models with bigger LCD screens, more resolution, and at least some internal memory. The company's promises are materialized in the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T5, which offers all of...

- Slim and sleek metal body - Long lasting battery - 2.5-inch, 230K pixel anti-glare LCD looks amazing - Easy to use

- Weak specular flash creates unflattering shadows - Flash not on lens axis - Lens is slow and poorly placed - Limited aperture and shutter speed options in low light (even when controlled by camera) - Tiny buttons - In-camera metering and...

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T5 makes good on Sony's promise to release digital cameras with big LCDs, mega resolution, and internal memory. The T5's 2.5-inch LCD screen includes 230,000 pixels, which is almost twice what the competition is offering on...

Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T5 (Black)

Sleek, sexy design; easy to use; large and clear LCD; solid snapshot feature set; high-quality movie mode; improved flash coverage; built-in tripod socket; decent battery life for a small cell; comes in four colors.

Mediocre image quality; high visual noise levels above ISO 100.

Although the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T5 features improvements over its T7 sibling, as well as much better value, its image quality still doesn't match the camera's other attributes.

Digital Cameras - Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T5 Digital Camera Review, Information, Specifications

Sony's Cyber-shot line of digital cameras has consistently proven itself to be versatile and excellent in quality, providing constant innovation in the digital camera marketplace. The DSC-T5 offers yet another exciting digicam option, with its tiny...

Ultra-slim form factor, literally shirt-pocket sized, Rich feature set for a subcompact, Excellent shutter response, much faster than average autofocus performance, Good continuous shooting speed, very good buffer depth (9 large/fine frames), Very good...

A good lens, but both barrel and pincushion distortion are higher than average, Significant blur on the right side of images at near-wide angle zoom, Aggressive noise suppression reduces detail at high ISO, Poor low-light performance due to short...

The Sony T5 zooms over the equivalent of a 38-114mm range, fairly typical for its class. Though a little soft at wide angle, with some mild coma distortion in the trees, the T's lens still performs well, and the camera's sharpening algorithms seem to...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T500 Review

Sony's latest touch screen ultracompact, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T500, takes aim at sophisticated shooters seeking high-quality video capture.

Slim, stylish form factor ; Best video capture around in a digicam ; Easy-to-use full auto camera ; Speedy performance

Noise, loss of color render highest ISOs useless ; AF flakes out on ocassion ; Some cheap looking plastics used in construction ; Needs a more powerful battery

Building on the foundation laid by Sony's long line of touch screen Cyber-shot T models, the T500 brings more advanced shooting features, 720p video recording, HDMI connectivity, and a more svelte and serious appearance to Sony's popular pocket cams

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T5

How does the T5 stand up in the crowded ultra compact field? Find out now in our review

Good photo quality (though see issue below) ; Ultra-thin, stylish metal body comes in four colors ; Large 2.5" LCD is very usable in bright outdoor light (though see issues below) ; Robust performance ; AF-assist lamp; good low light focusing ; Very...

Images are on the soft and fuzzy side ; Weak flash ; Redeye ; LCD hard to see in low light ; Sliding lens cover makes it easy to accidentally turn camera on/off ; No optical viewfinder ; Poorly-placed microphone ; Expensive memory card format ;...

If most of your photos will be outdoors, I can definitely recommend the DSC-T5. If you plan on doing shooting in lower light conditions, I'd find a camera with a stronger flash and brighter LCD -- you'll be a lot happier with the results. I can't see a...

Sony Cyber-Shot T5

The Sony Cyber-shot T5 sports the same features as the T7, T33 and T3 such as 5 megapixels, 3x optical zoom, a 2.5 inch LCD, unlimited VGA movies and a thin, stylish design. So let's just move along and see how the T5 fares.

Above average battery life ; Great LCD outdoor performance ; Fast ; Photos are less noisy ; Excellent movie mode ; Overall sharp photos

Weak flash ; Terrible LCD low-light performance ; Limited manual controls ; Slow, limited continuous shooting ; Red-eye ; Some soft edges

The Sony Cyber-shot T5 looks great and has a large, high-resolution LCD. Photo quality seems to have improved over the T7 and the T5 still maintains the excellent movie mode. Despite that, the Sony T5 has a weak flash, close to no manual controls and...

Sony Cybershot DSC-T5 digital camera

Seriously portable, the Sony Cybershot DSC-T5 is a 5.1 megapixel, ultra-slim digital camera ready to be taken anywhere. Our initial reaction on testing the camera was that it's so small…it really fits effortlessly in your hand and you could always...

Sony has done a good job with the Cybershot DSC-T5 and we rate it as good value for money. A feature loaded, ultra-compact camera that produces images of great quality and has only a few downsides.

Product Specifications

Why not spice up the color and activity of fall with Sony's latest "always with you, always ready" compact camera that easily slips in your pocket or smallest bag. The new Cyber-shot DSC-T5 digital camera is ultra slim, yet delivers great pictures. Like other cameras in Sony's T Series, this new model combines Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar optics with 5.1 megapixel resolution, a 3x optical zoom lens, a 2.5" Clear Photo LCD screen, 32 MB of internal memory for storage and easy transfer to an optional Memory Stick media card, and increased battery life compared to previous T Series models, with up to 240 shots per charge. The T5 has a vertical design: it features a lightweight, aluminum body with a sliding matte silver lens cover. It is easy to get the shots you want with the Cyber-shot T5. Slide the lens cover down and the camera is ready to capture images in less than a second. Thanks to its folding-optical-path design, the lens never needs to extend forward from the camera body. So you can enjoy the quality of Carl Zeiss optics and the power of a 3x optical zoom in a compact body. The T5 also comes equipped with Sony's anti-reflective Clear Photo LCD screen, which significantly reduces unwanted glare in brightly-lit environments and delivers vivid color reproduction. The camera's large 2.5" screen is optimized for easy viewing and sharing of images with friends, even at wide angles - whenever, wherever. Ten pre-set picture-taking modes also make it easier to get the perfect shot, without having to make any adjustments. Select "Magnifying Glass" for macro shooting up to 1 cm from your object or "High Speed Shutter" to catch fast-moving action like your mom's tennis match. And don't worry about your battery keeping up with you; Sony's Real Imaging Processor power management system lets you shoot full resolution images in seconds. At 240 shots per charge, the Cyber-shot T5's InfoLithium T series battery won't let you down. With this new camera, you not only get the still image but the video too. With an optional Memory Stick PRO Duo media card, shooting high-quality video is simple. MPEG-VX fine mode lets you record MPEG video with 640x480 pixel resolution at 30 frames per second, up to the capacity of a compatible media card. A 1-gigabyte Sony Memory Stick card can hold up to 12 minutes of VGA-quality 640 x 480 MPEG video and 384, 5-megapixel JPEG Fine images.
