Sony Cyber Shot W review: Sony Cyber Shot W

A junior version of the 7-megapixel DSC-W7 , the 5-megapixel Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W5 boasts the same no-nonsense, compact, metal-alloy body; gorgeous 2.5-inch LCD (which is coupled with a modest optical viewfinder for use in bright ambient light); 3X...

2.5-inch LCD; quick burst mode; flexible controls; solid image quality.

No shutter- or aperture-priority mode; manual focus limited to six preset steps; subpar optical viewfinder.

A 2.5-inch LCD, decent image quality, and both automated and selected manual controls make the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W5 a competent camera for the casual photographer.

Digital Cameras - Sony CyberShot DSC-W5 Digital Camera Review, Information, Specifications

As the lower-resolution sibling of the DSC-W7, which we also reviewed recently, the Sony DSC-W5 offers all the same features, but with a 5.1 megapixel CCD (vs 7.0) and at a list price that's $100 lower. As such, I'm a bit more enthusiastic about it...

Very fast, excellent shutter response, excellent shot to shot speed

So-so handling of household incandescent lighting

Similar in shape, size, and overall design to the DSC-W1, the new Sony DSC-W5 digital camera continues the more traditional digital camera styling that differentiated the original W1 from the rest of Sony's popular Cyber-shot line. The W5 is basically...

Sony Cyber-Shot W5

The new Sony Cyber-shot W5 still has the features that made the W1 great, including excellent battery life, unlimited VGA movies at 30 FPS, that high-quality Carl Zeiss lens, 5 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD and compatibility with conversion lenses....

Excellent battery life ; Rechargeable batteries included in the box ; Large and clear 2.5 inch LCD ; Many of scene modes ; Lots of accessories ; Excellent movie mode ; USB 2.0 High-speed interface

Limited manual controls ; Too much red-eye ; High noise levels ; Low resolution LCD ; Mediocre continuous shooting feature ; No fast shutter or portrait scene modes

The Sony Cyber-shot W5 is a camera with great photo quality, excellent battery life, lots of accessories and solid build. What the W5 lacks is real manual controls, a LCD of higher resolution, better continuous shooting and some better photos

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W5

Very little image lag, looks great, full set of functions, large LCD

Image quality is a little lacking on default settings, camera could be a smaller

This is a great 5 megapixel camera, highly recommended unless you want a lighter model that sits comfortably in your pocket. Its image quality problems can be overcome with a little tweaking.

PC Plus review: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W5

It's not the best 5-megapixel compact at the price - that title must go to Nikon's svelte Coolpix 5200 - but the lure of the big screen, chunky design and easy-to-follow menu make the W5 a serious rival. Undoubtedly, it will sell by the bucket load.

Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W5

The affordable, compact Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W5 combines responsive performance with solid image quality.

2.5-inch LCD ; Quick burst mode ; Flexible controls ; Solid image quality

No shutter- or aperture-priority mode ; Manual focus limited to six preset steps ; Subpar optical viewfinder

The Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W5 does have a few notable shortcomings. While shutter speed can be set manually and there's limited manual control over apertures, manual focus requires a trip to a menu where only five preset distances are available, from 0.5...

Sony DSC W5

Sony DSC W5 Review. This camera is well build and has a really solid feel in the hand. It has seven megapixels and a three times zoom lens.

Good picture quality ; Good build quality ; Rechargeable AA batteries supplied

Indoor portraits suffer from red eye

Excellent all round camera. Good indoors and outdoors. A good set of features are supported by an excellent build quality.
