Digital Compact Cameras

Samsung DualView TL225

Usually I'd spend a lot of time running down features and talking about performance before giving you the bottom line on Canon's new pocketable camera. But I just can't be coy about this one.

Awesomely fast lens. Granular control over just about any aspect of your shots that you can think of. Slick control ring. Quick startup and shooting

Slightly bulkier than the smallest pocket cams. Backside controls are a little cramped

Motorola CLIQ

Spending time with the Cliq, Motorola's first phone running Google's Android OS is like spinning doughnuts in a funny car for hours. It's thrilling and a little dizzying, but for those without an iron constitution it can be a little tumultuous on the ...

Finally, Android on a device not made by HTC. Responsive touchscreen is swipe-tastic. Good camera takes detailed, noise-free pics. Remote wipe and online backup service great for folks who are prone to losing their phones

Messy Motorola skin over-complicates simplistic Android UI. Far too many features that can't be hidden or deleted. Web browser is sucky mcsuck suck

Cyber-shot DSC-TX1 Rosa

The Lumix GH1 captures Pantone-precise colors and Ginsu-sharp details for both video and stills. Whatever you shoot, it offers the same bucketful of configuration options, including shutter speed, aperture, light sensitivity, and 12 style modes, like ...

Image-stabilized 10X zoom lens. Video mode has autofocus to track fast action. Offers 1080p HD video resolution at 24 frames per second for the most detail, or 720p at 30 fps for smoother motion. Swiveling 3-inch LCD is great for setting up shots

Menus with 1980s arcade-type graphics can be hard to navigate - six clicks just to delete all the pictures. Pricey

Roundup: Ring Flashes

Roundup: Ring Flashes

By Jon Snyder

Originally devised for dentists seeking to illuminate close-ups of bicuspids, ring flashes are ideal for spreading photons evenly and softly across small spaces. What do we love 'em for? Portrait photography in a pinch. When you're out in the field ...

Superb power - kicks out a blistering 320 watt seconds. Batteries not required, it's AC-powered. Large flash ring adaptor makes it easy to use any lens size with the unit. This was the closest thing to a studio flash we tested

AC-only power means you're anchored to a wall at all times. Mobility is limited to how far the power cord extends. The camera-mounting bracket is a total mess: You have to remove the bracket, screw the camera to the bracket, reattach the flash and ...

Swann Micro-VideoCam Recorder

Swann Micro-VideoCam Recorder

By Rachel Cericola

Somewhere in the back of Archie comics, between the X-ray Specs and the SeaMonkeys, is the natural home of the Swann Micro-VideoCam, a.k.a. the MovieStick, a mini movie camera for junior spooks and aspiring FBI informants.

The smallest video camera we've seen yet. Simple to setup and use. Makes you look like a double agent.

Location of camera lens makes it hard to go covert. No internal storage or memory card included. Recorded video is shakier and blurrier than outtakes from The Blair Witch Project.

Olympus Mju 1050SW

Olympus Stylus 1050 SW

By Roger Hibbert

Are you the schlemiel who's always dropping his cellphone or camera at parties? Or maybe you're the schlemazel who always gets the drink spilled on him? Either way, if you're looking for a camera to fit a clumsy or accident-prone lifestyle, the ...

Shockproof to 5 feet and waterproof 10 means you can bang it on the edge of the pool as you fall in with no harm done. Tap feature lets you change settings without futzing with buttons, and the camera can handle alpine frigidity with aplomb. Comes ...

Lens cover slides more easily than Ricky Henderson. The battery is easily inserted backwards, making you think it's dead or the camera is malfunctioning. Weak zoom and poor macro ability; this camera could use a bifocal upgrade.

ColorRight Color Balance Tool

One of the biggest complaints from photographers of every hardware allegiance is the color balance of their images. Skin tones are the biggest bugaboo because there are nearly seven billion variations - and for some odd reason - people get very fussy ...

Simple, quick and accurate white-balance calibrations on the fly. Available in neutral and warm versions.

Threaded plastic case is a bit cumbersome.

Leica D-Lux 4

Leica D-Lux 4

By Cliff Kuang

If you're serious about your pictures but wary of lugging around your SLR, you've had an embarrassment of riches in the last couple years, thanks to an array of plush, full featured point-and-shoots. A rasher of updates has just arrived: The Canon G10 ...

HD video. Awesomely vivid and accurate colors. Gorgeous leather accessories optional. Long warranty. Three aspect ratios (4:3, 3:2, and 16:9). A pop-up flash that's manually deployed: No more unintended bursts. Solid battery life.

A gussied up Lumix at double the price. Fiddly controls in manual mode. Viewscreen less sharp than resolution suggests.

Nikon Coolpix S60

Nikon Coolpix S60

By Michael S. Lasky

With its high-gloss metal case and giant 3.5-inch, iPhone-like touchscreen, the Nikon Coolpix S60 just begs to be touched. But your lust will turn to disgust once you get to know this camera's internal quirks. In this case, beauty is only skin deep.

Sleek and sexy. Fairly easy to use: Its iPhone-like touchscreen is appealing. Respectable 10 megapixels. Compact and lightweight (just 5.7 ounces).

Images aren't very crisp, unless they're well-lit outdoors shots. Short-lived battery. Overly wide touchscreen leaves no room for your fingers to hold the camera without inadvertently switching settings.
