Canon EOS Digital Rebel

Powerful DSLR for surprisingly little money ; accepts all existing Canon EOS lenses ; lightweight, with long battery life

Provides less control over exposure and focus than other DSLRs. No flash adjustment feature

Even though it's a bit pricey, this is a very good camera for the money, whether you're a pro who wants a powerful pocketable camera or a beginner who wants a great camera to grow with.

Canon EOS Digital Rebel Digital Camera Review

The Canon EOS Digital Rebel is the newest in a long line of Canon SLR cameras. As with their other models, the user can expect a quality product when they get a Canon. The major difference between the Digital Rebel and its predecessors (Canon's 10D and...

- nice design, layout and button positioning - easier to transport than other digital SLRs - user friendly, easy handling - extensive processing parameter options

- feels too flimsy with plastic body - can't choose between metering modes - only one self-timer option - slow start-up time

After a year on the market, Canon's answer to the sub-$1000 digital SLR demand still holds its own. It defined the newest amateur class of digital SLR cameras and paved the way for many cameras to come. Bringing along some of the best qualities of the...

Canon Digital Rebel

Expandable ; Great value ; Excellent image quality ; Easier to use than other digital SLRs ; Excellent performance

AF illuminator works only for flash shots ; Plastic body ; Many manual features missing, compared with the EOS 10D

Editor's note: We have changed the rating in this review to reflect recent changes in our rating scale. Click here to find out more.

Aggressive price; excellent, low-noise images; speedy performance; long battery life.

Can't save custom settings; limited metering options; continuous-shooting mode snaps a maximum of four shots.

A low price boosts the Canon EOS Digital Rebel's appeal for amateur film-SLR photographers going digital and high-end snapshooters who want to experiment more.

Highly Recommended!

Canon EOS 300D / Digital Rebel

On 20th August 2003 Canon surprised many people (not least us) when it announced its $899 / €1,099 EOS 300D (Digital Rebel). This digital SLR based on the EOS 10D's superb six megapixel CMOS sensor and image processor in an inexpensive consumer body...

Excellent resolution, matches EOS 10D, Good color, more contrasty tonal response thanks to default parameter set, Noise free 'silky smooth' images at ISO 100, 200 and 400, Very low noise levels even at ISO 1600, virtually unnoticeable below this,...

Opening the CF compartment door shuts camera down, loses any buffered images, Still a very average automatic white balance performance, we expected more, 'Dumbed down' feature set (forced AI Focus, forced Evaluative metering, etc.), Plastic finish will...

The EOS 300D is a formidable camera, not from a feature set point of view.

Affordable Digital SLR History 101 ¡ª In mid-2000 Canon rocked the digital SLR camera world with the introduction of the EOS D30, its large-area 3.25-megapixel CMOS image sensor and unbelievable $2999 street price. Canon made it clear that the D30 was...

In order to use this program you must have the Canon USB camera drivers already installed and working. The FECSet download is a standard Windows MSI install package meaning setup and removal is simple and straightforward.

Canon EOS 300D Digital Rebel Review Round-Up

The EOS 300D's plastic body is just one of the elements used to reduce the cost of the camera, others include the use of a pentamirror in the viewfinder instead of a pentaprism, a reduction of features … and a shifting of manufacturing from Japan to...

Product Specifications

The EOS Digital Rebel incorporates a Canon-developed 6.3-megapixel large-area high-resolution CMOS sensor and Canon's exclusive DIGIC Image Processor, which realizes exceeding image-processing speed and precision to fully utilize the performance potential of the sensor. This advanced technology works in concert to realize outstanding image quality and definition, and more natural color reproduction to satisfy the requirements of a broad user base. The EOS Digital Rebel offers advanced shooting features, including a high-speed 7-point wide area autofocus (AF) with focusing points superimposed in the viewfinder, making accurate framing simple; Continuous Shooting at approximately 2.5 frames per second for a burst of up to four shots; and the ability to record JPEG images in one of six formats or as a 12-bit RAW file. Moreover, when a RAW image is captured the EOS Digital Rebel simultaneously records and stores a JPEG image (Medium/Fine) within the RAW data, enabling users to view or transmit the compressed JPEG image quickly while also retaining maximum image quality for future editing. Employing high-density mounting technology and a new chassis and outer-casing configuration with fewer parts, the Canon EOS Digital Rebel realizes the smallest and lightest body in the EOS DIGITAL series. In addition to compact proportions, the camera's design contributes to outstanding usability, concentrating such operating controls as the mode dial and electronic dial on the right-hand side for one-handed operation of most shooting functions. The EOS Digital Rebel is compatible with the PictBridge industry standard for the direct printing of photos from digital cameras. As a result, users can connect the camera directly to any printer enabled for PictBridge, regardless of brand, and output photos (JPEG) without having to use a computer.
