EOS 30D

Seriously Superior Digital SLR

Great image quality and color fidelity ; A little pricey

A little pricey

If you can afford the EOS 30D, buy it. If you need to save for it, then be patient - eating ramen for a month to save up the extra cash is worth it. You won't be disappointed with the EOS 30D.

Canon EOS 30D Digital SLR

The 8.2-megapixel sibling of the popular EOS 20D has a large LCD and a pleasing interface.

High quality RAW conversion, Excellent interface

Software's RAW conversion is slow, Auto-bracketing limited to three stops

EOS 30D

At 8.2 megapixels, with a 5-frame-per-second burst, a 9-point autofocus system, and Canon's DIGIC II processing chip, the 30D matches its predecessor, the Canon EOS 20D, specification for specification. However, the 30D has a 2.5-inch LCD, which makes...

Just like the 20D - a good, 8.2-megapixel workhorse ; Excellent image quality ; 2.5-inch, 230,000-pixel LCD ; Quick Dial and four-way controller for quick, flexible navigation ; 5 fps burst rate

Just like the 20D - no improvements in imaging performance - Important controls require menu access ; Default Picture Style, "Standard," oversharpens and oversaturates heavily ; Viewfinder accuracy is relatively poor ; Lacks commander flash capability...

The Canon EOS 30D has several important refinements over its predecessor, the Canon EOS 20D, and it maintains that camera's many strengths. Its solid build, excellent image quality, and respectable speed (5 fps at 8.2 megapixels) make it a very...

Canon EOS 30D SLR

The EOS 30D Digital SLR is the much anticipated update to Canon's popular EOS 20D. It takes the same 8.2-megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor and mates it to the more powerful DIGIC II Imaging processor for fast 5 fps performance. The EOS 30D takes...

EOS 30D SLR Digital Camera

It might be logical to assume that Canon's new EOS 30D digital SLR camera, successor to the company's popular EOS 20D, would pack a higher-resolution sensor. But such is not the case. The EOS 30D ($1499 as of March 21, 2006) provides the same imaging...

High quality RAW conversion Excellent interface

Software's RAW conversion is slow Auto-bracketing limited to three stops

Other important new additions include the ability to adjust ISO in increments of one-third stop; an ISO readout in the viewfinder, so you don't have to consult the LCD to change the ISO; an optional slower burst speed, which permits more shots in a...

Canon EOS 30D

The model line in which the EOS 30D sits has seen a total of five models, each offering either an upgrade in features, resolution or both. From the EOS D30 to D60 we saw a doubling in megapixel count as well as numerous feature upgrades, from the EOS...

Excellent resolution, very good per-pixel sharpness ; Good tonal and color response, same as EOS 20D 'Parameter 1' in Standard PS ; Now with four metering modes, spot metering very welcome ; Trademark Canon CMOS noise free images, remain detailed even...

Average automatic white balance performance, still very poor under incandescent light ; AI Servo (continuous AF) interference banding issue (certain lenses, high sensitivities) ; Same old 'CF compartment door shuts camera down' issue ; Picture Style...

Maybe Canon do listen, with the i EOS 30D they have addressed no less than five of the 'Cons' from my EOS 20D review; Lack of spot metering, Fixed continuous shooting rate, Limited range of image parameter adjustment, Small LCD monitor and ISO...

Canon EOS 30D (Body Only)

Editors' note: Changes in the competitive landscape for digital SLRs as well as the release of a newer model have prompted us to adjust the ratings for this camera twice. In September 2007, we dropped the Design and Performance ratings to 8, for a new...

Excellent low-light performance; fast and responsive; straightforward controls; nice balance of features for both experienced and rookie photographers.

Pop-up flash casts shadow with some lenses; average battery life.

An excellent midrange digital SLR, the 30D has given way to its even more excellent successor, the 40D. However, it remains a great choice if you can find it at a good price.

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT Digital Camera Review

Canon EOS 30D

If you have an older Digital SLR or one of the Digital Rebel models, this is a more substantial upgrade - One that should be considered carefully.

Canon EOS 30D Digital Camera Review: Intro and Highlights

The Canon EOS-30D is the latest in Canon's broad line of digital SLR models, but it is more evolutionary than revolutionary, keeping most of what was excellent about its predecessor, the EOS 20D. Canon says they listened to feedback from 20D customers...

Numerous tweaks, user-interface, and functional improvements over EOS-20D, Excellent resolution, in-camera sharpening seems to have been tweaked slightly, Excellent color, very slightly more saturated than that of the 20D in its default mode (some reds...

No revolutionary changes, probably not worth the money as an upgrade for current 20D owners, Strong reds still get a bit oversaturated, Auto white balance is only average, camera has a hard time with strongly-colored light sources (miserable color...

Product Specifications

Canon's EOS 30D brings proven EOS technology to a next level, giving photographers an unbeatable photographic experience. The EOS 30D incorporates a host of features with Canon's highly acclaimed 8.2 megapixel CMOS sensor and DIGIC II Image Processor. The EOS 30D includes enhanced operational features such as 2.5-inch LCD monitor, true spot metering, a durable shutter mechanism and Canon's Picture Style feature, all in a sturdy, magnesium-clad body. With all these features the EOS 30D is truly perfection, refined. Canon's large-area CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensor captures images with exceptional clarity and tonal range, and offers the most pixels in its class. This APS-C size sensor (22.5 x 15.0mm) has the same 3:2 ratio as film cameras, enabling an effective angle of view that is 1.6x the normal EF Lens focal length. The EOS 30D has an extensive ISO range (from 100 to 1600 plus ISO 3200 in extended mode), which is selectable in 1/3-stop increments. The sensor features a set of narrow-gap microlenses and noise reduction circuits to improve performance at high ISO values, and optimized photodiode configurations for improved performance at all ISO values. This results in larger, clearer, sharper and more detailed photographs right from the start. The EOS 30D is the product of Canon's extensive in-house development: The DIGIC II Image Processor was designed specifically for Canon digital SLRs and enhances every aspect of image capture. Information captured by the CMOS sensor is processed and assembled into images of exceptional quality. With the DIGIC II Image Processor on board, photographers can expect natural color reproduction, precise white balance in any number of lighting situations and unparalleled clarity. The DIGIC II Image Processor employs sophisticated signal processing algorithms and works at greater speeds, all while consuming less energy. The entire processing chip - not just the software that drives it - is dedicated for use in a digital still camera. The EOS 30D is one of the fastest cameras Canon has ever produced. Incorporating the fast operation of the EOS 20D, the 30D allows users to specify high-speed 5 fps or low-speed 3 fps continuous shooting for more controlled shooting and/or to save space on the CF card. And it can capture up to 30 JPEG and 11 RAW (or 9 RAW + JPEG) files in one burst. Whether it's the 0.15-second startup time, the high-speed mirror drive, the nearly instant 65-millisecond shutter release lag time or the predictive AF focusing at speeds up to 5.0 frames per second, the EOS 30D will amaze and delight photographers who don't want to wait for their camera when they're ready to shoot. The EOS 30D has a brilliant 2.5 inch LCD monitor with approximately 230, 000 pixels. Adopted from Canon's professional EOS SLRs, this monitor not only displays more information, it can also be viewed at a greater angle (170
