Canon EOS 40D

The Canon EOS 40D is a subtle improvement over the 30D, but in many ways it's also an understudy for the EOS 1D Mark III. The 40D is used by many professionals as well as enthusiasts, and in our tests we found the camera does have a lot to offer in...

The camera costs Rs 64,990; this obviously puts it beyond amateur photographers, and into the realm of serious work. The settings are extensive, and the colors are just right, offering the right tonal response. The large screen LCD, fast picture...

Smile! You're on Canon's camera!

Excellent image quality. Comfortable, solid body. Live View LCD mode. Complete manual controls and customization.

Noise creeps into extreme-ISO photos. Can't use Live View or RAW formats in auto modes.

The Canon 40D bridges entry-level SLRs with expensive, pro options. We can easily overlook its few shortcomings and focus on its excellent image quality and wide array of useful features.

Canon EOS 40D

Late last year Canon released the EOS 40D, a 10-megapixel D-SLR targeted to serious photographers since it costs north of $1,000 USD for the body alone. Add a few lenses and accessories, the next thing you know you've hit $2K. This camera is targeted...

Good 10MP images; amazing 6.5 fps burst mode; large 3-inch LCD

Heavy; noisy above 800 ISO; Live View

The 40D is amazing as it blitzes through JPEGs and even huge RAW+JPEG files.

A year and a half in the making, Canon's EOS 40D modifies the foundation set by the EOS 30D and 20D, while incorporating elements from the manufacturer's 1D line. The camera is centered on a 10.1-megapixel APS-C-sized CMOS sensor, paired with a newly...

6.5 fps burst ; List price ; sRAW ; Live Preview ; Highlight Tone Priority ; Reorganized menus ; Wireless capabilities ; Constant display of ISO in viewfinder ; 95x viewfinder ; Interchangeable focusing screens ; Dust reduction ; Additional...

Reassigned buttons on top of camera ; Non-customizable Picture Styles and Direct Print buttons ; Silent modes are not as quiet as expected ; Lacks body-based image stabilization ; No commander flash mode

The EOS 40D stands as a solid successor to Canon's popular EOS 30D. It offers increased resolution, 30 percent faster continuous shooting, and enhanced computing power. A number of innovations, such as sRAW files, Live Preview, automatic dust...

Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR

New Canon digital SLR camera strikes a terrific balance between performance and price.

Fast: Capable of 6.5 frames per second ; Produced pleasing, well-balanced images

Live View mode is kludgy

The strengths of the Canon EOS 40D overshadow those minor drawbacks, however. On the whole, it is a powerful, scalable camera. If you're graduating from a Rebel-series digital SLR, this is a great step-up model whose versatility will grow along with...

Updated 12/23/08: I've used a wide spectrum of digital SLRs, from entry-level models up to pro models. Once you have a taste of the capabilities of a professional camera, you can't easily go back to a digital SLR that's less full-featured; likewise, if...

Feature-packed camera produces great images, too; will appeal to enthusiasts and pros alike.

Canon EOS 40D SLR

The EOS 40D inherits some advanced features from Canon's professional cameras and puts them to good use. It has a newly designed, high-precision 9-point wide area AF that uses cross-type points, enabling the camera to focus faster, more accurately, and...

Canon EOS 40D (Body Only)

Editors' note: The competitive landscape for this camera has changed since our review, and we've updated the text and ratings to reflect that and the model's lower price. The design rating goes from a 9 to an 8--while still a nicely designed model,...

Generally superior shooting speed among dSLRs; first-rate photo quality.

Large spot size for spot meter; relatively sluggish low-light focus.

Great photo quality and excellent continuous-shooting performance are just two of the Canon EOS 40D's many attractions in the digital camera marketplace.

Canon EOS 40D

Almost immediately upon the announcement of the Canon EOS 40D, the most-frequently asked question I have been receiving since the announcement of the Canon EOS 400D/Rebel XTi one year ago nearly disappeared from my inbox. Until this time, the lower end...

While the 1DIII's resolution is similar to the 40D, the per-pixel image quality and low ISO noise yield images that are even more impressive than the 40D's. The 1D III's 45pt AF is faster, its frame rate is higher, its shutter is rated for 3x the...
