Nikon 1 AW1

The Nikon 1 AW1 is the first interchangeable lens camera that you can take deep underwater, but it's best left in automatic mode.

Rugged design. Waterproof to 49 feet. Integrated GPS. Good high ISO performance. Very fast burst shooting and focus. Unique shooting modes. 1080i60 and slow-motion video support

Pricey. Controls may frustrate advanced photographers. Electronic shutter limits sync speed. External adapter required to add Wi-Fi support. Limited lens selection

The Nikon 1 AW1 ($799.95 direct) is the first interchangeable lens digital camera that can survive a trip underwater. It's rated to work in water as deep as 49 feet, survive drops from 6.6 feet, and shoot in extreme cold—14°F above ground and 32°F...

Nikon 1 AW1 review

A few months ago we reviewed Nikon's solid Nikon 1 J3 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Overall we liked the camera, although we did have a few quibbles. With the new AW1, Nikon has taken that same J3 and turned it into a rugged, outdoor camera....

Waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof ; Produces better images than rugged compacts ; Solid construction

Average lens ; Lower quality images at higher ISO settings ; Only two rugged 1 Nikkor lenses available right now

The Nikon AW1 takes the solid Nikon 1 J3 and makes it waterproof, shockproof, and freezeproof, and throws in GPS capability to boot.

Nikon 1 AW1 Preview

Nikon today announced a camera so promising that, should it actually deliver on its many promises and performance specifications, will absolutely be at the top of everyone's 2013 Must Buy and/or Christmas season shopping lists. The Nikon 1 AW1 is the...

Nikon 1 AW1

A durable camera with an interchangeable lens

Perhaps saying that a camera straddles the Mendoza line isn't the most rousing endorsement, but the Nikon AW1 offers a very average performance—with a twist. A ruggedized interchangeable lens camera is certainly a novel take on the mirrorless compact,...

Nikon 1 AW1 Review: Waterproof Trailblazer

Consumers have shown that they really like compact digital cameras that combine the ease of a point and shoot with the feature set of a DSLR. They like larger sensors, enhanced performance, better image quality, and the abilty to swap lenses. The new...

Waterproof, shockproof, dustproof, and freezeproof ; Neutral colors ; Fills a unique product niche

Poorly placed action mode control ; handgrip is less than ideal

Bridge cameras are supposed to "bridge" the gap between two different types of camera. The AW1 ups the ante significantly and tries to bridge the gap between three different types of camera - compact enthusiast P&S digicams, interchangeable lens...

Object of Desire: Nikon 1 AW1 Camera

Nikon recently released the first interchangeable lens camera that can shoot up to 15 meter underwater.

Underwater shooters have had two options in recent years: either buy a bulky housing for their digital SLR or interchangeable lens camera—a pricey, not always sensible option if they’re just going on vacation or experimenting—or opt for one of the...

Nikon 1 AW1 review

The Nikon 1 AW1 is waterproof and shockproof making it one very tough Compact System Camera. We were invited along for a closer look...

Sharply detailed results ; Rugged weighty feel ; Built to last

Lack of viewfinder ; Occasional misting ; No hot shoe

The Nikon 1 AW 1 is a nice idea, although it's likely to be a niche product. While pro snappers will be happy to shell out for pricey underwater housing for their DSLRs, divers and sports fans are currently more likely to use action cams. The AW1 sits...

Hands on: Nikon 1 AW1 review

Is the world's first waterproof interchangeable lens camera a winner?

Hands-on: An interchangeable lens camera that's waterproof to 15m? Impressive

Overall, the Nikon 1 AW1 looks like a very promising camera. We normally roll my eyes when a company claims a 'world first' but for once it's something actually worth shouting about. The only caveat at this point, or at least one of two, is whether the...

Nikon 1 AW1

An ideal companion for your active life, the Nikon 1 AW1 offers interchangeable lenses and better image quality than your standard waterproof point-and-shoot.

First waterproof interchangeable lens camera ; Built like a tank to withstand the elements ; Incredibly fast 60fps shooting speed

No image stabilisation in either of the waterproof lenses ; Wi-Fi not built in, relies on optional adapter ; Screen is difficult to see in direct sunlight

In its primary capacity as an underwater camera, the AW1 performs very well. Does it deliver the best photos from an ILC? No. But it is the only rugged model that will withstand whatever you can throw at it and give you the flexibility of changing...
