Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18

I've always personally considered superzooms a better option for amateur hobby photographers than D-SLRs, primarily because you get so much more right out of the box. If you still feel limited, there are quite a number of add-ons you can use. Now with...

The 8.1 megapixel resolution may not sound very exciting, but considering that there's also the 18x zoom and an OIS to handle, extra processing time for a higher resolution image would probably take a toll on the camera's performance. Still, 8.1...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18K Digital Camera

Decently priced megazoom is a great learning tool for point-and-shoot graduates.

Excellent 18x optical zoom Leica lens ; Burst mode returns clear photos

Zoom disabled in video mode ; Battery life is disappointing

Besides its manual controls and its wide-angle lens, the Lumix FZ18K has other goodies for more-advanced photographers and image editors; for instance, images can be shot in RAW format--but keep in mind that the image size will be about six times...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18K

The least expensive camera in our megazoom roundup, the $350 Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18K offers an 18X optical zoom, a 28mm wide-angle lens, and a host of manual controls for a very reasonable price. An amateur photographer who hasn't used many advanced...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18

Panasonic's latest digicam boasts a whopping 18X zoom and backs it up with sharp and steady shots.

Strong 18X zoom ; Optical image stabilizer ; Fast image processor ; Shoots in RAW mode

Noisy photos at ISO 800 and higher ; Zoom doesn't work while capturing video ; No MEGA OIS button

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18

Even though it's on the high-priced side for a point-and-shoot, this ultra zoom digicam is one of 2007's most popular cameras (at least if you go by many of the imaging sites). There are some obvious reasons for this: the 8-megapixel camera has a...

8MP digicam with 18x wide angle zoom; OIS

Noisy at ISO 400 and above

Once you step toward the myriad manual options, you'll be happy as a clam if adjusting photo parameters is your thing.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 (Black)

Though far from perfect, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 shapes up to be the best of the cameras promising 18x-zoom Nirvana we've reviewed so far, a trio rounded out by the slow Fujifilm FinePix S8000fd and the slower Olympus SP-550 UZ. Like those models,...

Wide-angle, long zoom lens; nice set of shooting features

Camera's JPEG processing choices can produce suboptimal results; no zoom in movie capture; sluggish LCD/EVF update

A decent but not great camera, the megazoom Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 still manages to outdo its few competitors.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18

Barely half a year after the introduction of the DMC-FZ8, Panasonic added another model to its popular range of compact 'super zoom' Lumix cameras in the shape of the FZ18. Although obviously based on the FZ8 (they are externally almost identical), the...

Good, sharp results in optimal shooting conditions ; Good, natural color and excellent exposure ; Hugely versatile 18x zoom range covering true wideangle to long telephoto ; Smooth, almost stepless 2-speed zoom ; Effective image stabilization ; Good...

Images lack biting crispness, some loss of fine detail to noise reduction even at ISO 100 ; Default noise reduction too high at all ISO settings (use low NR setting or raw) ; Occasional odd artefacts at lower ISO settings (some moiré related, some just...

One thing that has become obvious to us as we've looked at the various 18x 'super zoom' models that have appeared since the Olympus SP-550UZ burst onto the scene at the start of the year is that they will always involve a certain degree of compromise,...

Lumix DMC-FZ18

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 aims to be the camera that has it all: a wide 28mm angle for photographing group portraits and architecture as well as the power of a long 18x optical zoom lens. With a lens like that, this 8.1-megapixel Lumix stands at the...

Manual controls ; Great videos ; Wide, long 18x lens ; Accurate colors ; Great resolution ; Effective face detection

207k LCD resolution ; Optical zoom nonfunctional in movie mode ; Poor audio ; Ugly noise apparent above ISO 200 ; Inconsistent AF in low light

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 is much improved from the FZ8. It has more resolution, a longer and wider 18x optical zoom lens, and adds features like face detection. The Panasonic FZ18 outperforms its predecessor in almost every way. Its pictures have...

Quality Pictures With Point-and-Shoot Ease

If you're shopping for a new digital camera you basically have two options: pick up a toy shooter that can't grow with you; or plunk down a grand for a fancy

Takes awesome pictures. Very easy to use. The 18x zoom doesn't sacrifice detail. Great software package with flawless panoramic stitching

You can’t use the zoom option when playing back video with audio on the LCD screen, which caused us to miss the loud 18X version of a seal chomping on a companion's nose. And the audio coming out of the speaker was a bit tinny

Product Specifications

Experience the power of an incredible 18x optical zoom in an 8.1-megapixel camera that fits in the palm of your hand. From vast landscapes to super telephoto shots, the DMC-FZ18 gives you crisp, stunning images using a 28mm wide-angle Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens. For macro shots, the wide-angle setting lets you shoot all the way down to one centimeter from your subject, while the telephoto setting can be used up to one meter (3.28 feet) from your subject. With the Extended Optical Zoom function, zoom power is boosted to around 28.7x (in 3-megapixel resolution mode). Say good-bye to complicated settings. Just turn the dial to iA and the DMC-FZ18 will not only help eliminate blurring from handshake or subject movement, but it will also detect up to 15 faces and automatically select the focus, exposure and scene modes for the best results. Camera shake is the number one cause of blurry, out-of-focus pictures. That's why Panasonic Lumix digital cameras come equipped with advanced Optical Image Stabilization (MEGA O.I.S.) that detects even the tiniest camera movement, then automatically adjusts the lens to compensate. With MEGA O.I.S., you're ensured sharp, clear pictures every time without any loss of image detail or clarity. Thanks to Intelligent ISO, Panasonic Lumix digital cameras capture crisp, clear images even when your subject moves as you shoot. Advanced subject-motion detection circuitry senses when your subject is moving and raises the camera's ISO sensitivity and shutter speed settings accordingly. This suppresses motion blur and also makes it easy to shoot scenes with fast moving action. The Face Detection function automatically chooses the optimal settings to make sure faces appear well lit and in focus. This advanced technology can detect up to 15 faces in a scene, and will even automatically readjust the settings if their positions change. In Intelligent Auto Mode, the camera automatically begins focusing even before you press the shutter button, so you'll never miss an opportunity for a great shot. With your Panasonic Lumix digital camera in Intelligent Auto Mode, the Intelligent Scene Selector will sense the ambient conditions and automatically select either the Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode accordingly. With the camera choosing the settings for you, you'll get beautiful results every time you shoot, no matter what the scene or subject.
