Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF5 review

While the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3 isn't perfect, it's still among my favorite choices for snapshooters looking for a faster, better camera but one that's similar enough to a point-and-shoot -- or phone -- that they're not forced out of their comfort...

Relatively compact for its class, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF5 delivers excellent performance and good-to-great photo quality.

The Power Zoom lens isn't great and there are some image-quality flaws in the JPEGs that might bother some people.

With capable, speedy performance, and a friendly but powerful interface, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF5 is a good choice for people looking to upgrade from a point-and-shoot.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF5 Hands-on Preview

The GF5 is the fourth in Panasonic's range of small-bodied 'GF' Micro Four Thirds cameras, and sits below the G3 in the current lineup. The differences between the GF5 and its predecessor are relatively few, and we doubt they'll prove significant...

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GF5 Preview

I've heard it a thousand times. You have a growing love for photography and are tired of point-and-shoot restrictions. Maybe you're looking for a dSLR, but simply not ready to trade the slim size of pocket sized cameras for the bulk of something...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF5 Review

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF5 is a small and stylish compact system camera that features a FourThirds sized 12.1-megapixel Live MOS image sensor, Venus Engine VII HD2 processor, 0.09 second contrast-detect auto-focusing, built-in pop-up flash and a 3...

With Panasonic recently launching the photographer-focused GX-1 for fans of the original GF1, the GF-series is now even more firmly aimed at compact owners looking to upgrade to a more capable camera. The diminutive DMC-GF5 certainly fits that bill...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF5

In refreshing its modestly-sized, modestly-priced touchscreen mirrorless camera, Panasonic has wisely left the sensor resolution unchanged. Instead, the Panasonic GF5 brings lower noise levels, performance improvements, and some worthwhile improvements...

Small body pairs nicely with compact, retractable Power Zoom lens. Extremely fast autofocus. Worthwhile improvements in image quality. Touchscreen overlays can now be hidden

LCD panel is prone to fingerprint smudges. Weak flash, and no hot shoe. Modest burst performance, and very limited buffer for raw shooting. Noise levels and dynamic range still lag competition

Thanks to the pairing of compact size and the flexibility of an interchangeable lens mount, mirrorless cameras have become increasingly popular over the last few years. If you pair the Panasonic GF5 with its Power Zoom kit lens, and place it alongside...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF5 Review

The Panasonic Lumix GF5 is an ideal mirrorless camera for someone wanting to upgrade from a point and shoot, but does not want the heft of a DSLR. Two intelligent auto modes, 14 creative filters, 23 SCN modes ensure that this is meant for the amateur...

Speedy AF, Variety of creative filters and Scene modes, Great handling, Good image quality

Manual focussing notch is not placed ergonomically, Videos tend to record zooming and focussing sound, No hot-shoe

Panasonic Lumix GF5 Review

An all-around excellent four-thirds camera that stands among the top of its class.

Excellent image quality that captures details and true to life colors; Strong sensor; Solid build design that doesn't feel cheap; Interface is efficient and easy to understand; Loaded with features for the casual user; Great quality of lenses

High ISO ranges in low light lead to noise and loss of detail; Lack of viewfinder and hotshoe

Another thing of note here is the 0.09 seconds, which is actually the fastest auto-focus in any camera in the market as per Pansonic’s research which is very impressive.

Panasonic Lumix GF5 - Friendly Mirrorless

Nope, you didn't miss a number - Panasonic has jumped straight from last year's GF3 to this year's brand new GF5, skipping the number 4 in-between. The camera is Panasonic's newest entry-level Micro Four Thirds camera, so check out our review to see if...

Recommended Filter makes filters easy ; Touch-screen is easy to use ; Fast & accurate auto-focus system

X 14-42mm lens is inconsistent ; ISO performance not on par

Panasonic's strength has always been in making user-friendly cameras and that focus should be applauded (believe it or not, user-friendliness doesn't seem to always be a priority for camera companies). As Panasonic's newest entry-level

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF5

An evolutionary upgrade from Panasonic's GF3, the GF5 is also pointed at point and shoot users looking for better image quality. It's a very small camera even with the stabilized 14-42 power zoom lens attached, a much smaller lens than Olympus' 14-42....
