Olympus E-30

Olympus E-30

By PJ Jacobowitz

The Olympus E-30 ($1,299.99 list, body only) has enough nifty features to turn headsmost notably, offering the capability to add Photoshop-like effects and merge four images into one on the fly. But is that enough? While its images are sharp when ...

Very sharp pictures. Fast. In-camera Photoshop-esque effects. Swiveling LCD

Noisy at high ISOs. A bit pricey. No HDMI-out

The Olympus E-30 produces superbly sharp pictures, but at higher ISOs its images get extremely noisyplus it's missing a lot of niceties we'd like in a higher-end D-SLR.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1

By PJ Jacobowitz

much smaller. Panasonic gets points for being first, but these cameras will need to be much more compact to truly impress. We saw just how small Micro Four Thirds camera bodies can be when we got a peek of a tiny Olympus prototype at Photo Plus late ...

Uses new "Micro Four Thirds" standard, which allows for a smaller body and lens than comparable entry-level D-SLRs. Solid image quality at ISO 100-800. Large, articulating 3-inch LCD. HDMI-out

Not much smaller than a D-SLR. No optical viewfinder. Excessive noise at higher ISOs. Longer shutter lag than traditional D-SLRs. No video-recording capability

Panasonic is the first out of the gate with a camera that's built around the new Micro Four Thirds lens standard, which promises SLR-quality images from a smaller camera and lens. But the Lumix DMC-G1's body is bulky enough and its image quality ...

Nikon D90

Nikon D90

By Tony Hoffman

Budding shutterbugs looking into buying their first D-SLR are often surprised to discover that, despite the digital SLR's many admirable qualities, it lacks one feature that most simple point-and-shoot models these days have: the ability to shoot ...

Solid image quality. Excellent color fidelity. Low noise, even at high ISOs. Shoots HD video

Controls aren't very intuitive. Relatively low still-image resolution. Video features are limited

The Nikon D90 is notable for being the first digital SLR to shoot video (in HD, no less), a nice extra for an already quite capable shooter.

Nikon D60

Nikon D60

By David Gussman

When a camera manufacturer releases a pricey D-SLR, it had better have killer features or some sort of hook to entice current users to upgrade to the latest model or to get new customers to take the plunge. The Nikon D60, while a very good camera, ...

Excellent image quality. Easy-to-use on-screen menu system. Stop-motion movie mode. Automatic dust-cleaning system

Very similar to the older Nikon D40x. Specs are below average when compared with the competition. Slow three-point autofocus ; Watch the Nikon D60 Video Review

The Nikon D60 is a worthwhile entry-level D-SLR with solid image quality, but its features don't really make it stand out from the crowd.

Olympus E-3

Directly competing against the Canon EOS 40D and the Nikon D300 the Olympus E-3 is one big, bad shooter: Even for a D-SLR, it's pretty huge. But with girth comes superb image quality and a hearty assortment of features, such as a swiveling LCD, live ...
