Very good image quality. Sensor-based image stabilization.
Borrowing its design from the Konica-Minolta 5D, Sony's first D-SLR may not be original or very affordable, but its nice image quality and robust feature set are promising.

First D-SLR to let you compose your shots on its LCD screen. Articulating 2.5-inch LCD.
It may not be a flawless camera, but the Olympus Evolt E-330 stands apart from all other D-SLRs on the market today.

New wireless flash system can fire the built-in strobe. Great performance and picture quality.
Expensive. Price is body only, no lens. Heavy. Some features are too complicated for beginners.
The D200's speedy performance and unique features make it a powerful D-SLR worthy of an Editors' Choice.

Light and portable. Uses double-A batteries. Decent burst mode.
So-so image quality. Poor flash. Slower than the competition.
With just passable image quality and performance, the *ist DS2 is outclassed by the competition.

Large, clear 2.5-inch LCD. Supports a variety of shooting formats, even multiple formats simultaneously.
Controls could be better organized. Image quality could be better. Weak burst mode.
The Olympus Evolt E-500 is a very good entry-level D-SLR that falls just shy of greatness.

Incredibly portable and lightweight for a D-SLR. Provides lots of options and features. Inexpensive.
1.5X magnification factor. Burst rate could be quicker. Menu structure could be better.
The Pentax *ist DL is a worthy follow-up to the capable *ist DS, but doesn't quite measure up to other low-cost consumer D-SLR offerings.

Excellent picture quality. Wide dynamic range. Lots of control over settings.
Slow burst mode. Menus and displays on LCD are a little confusing. Very expensive.
Some professional portrait photographers may enjoy the quality, but the S3 Pro is too expensive to have such a slow burst rate.

Slightly larger LCD than the D70. Excellent flash coverage. Good menu structure.
Expensive.
The D70s is basically the popular D70 with a slightly larger LCD screen. It's an excellent 6.1MP D-SLR, but our Editors' Choice remains the Canon Rebel XT, an excellent (and less expensive) 8MP D-SLR.
