Pentax K-50

The Pentax K-50 is a fully weather-sealed D-SLR camera with an big optical viewfinder and fast burst shooting capability. It's available to order in any of 120 color combinations, but its video functionality is behind the times.

Large pentaprism viewfinder. Weather-sealed design. 5.9fps burst shooting. Customizable controls and noise reduction. In-body shake reduction. Very good high ISO performance. Available in 120 different colors

Fixed rear LCD. No mic input. Slow to focus when recording video

The Pentax K-50 ($699.95 direct, body only) is a solid midrange D-SLR camera, which happens to be available in any of 120 color combinations. Despite the fact that it can be had in a lilac and pink color scheme, it's a serious photographic tool....

Camera Test: Pentax K-50

The Pentax Way, for a long time now, has been to offer up rugged, weather-sealed DSLRs priced well below comparably built competitors. Its latest DSLR, the K-50 ($697, street, body only), continues this trend, while also showcasing a new Pentax Way:...

Pentax K-50: Lab Test & Comments

The Pentax K-50 is, in its basic specifications, identical with the company's new K-500 model. Both cameras offer a 16MP sensor, a built-in stabilizer system (based on sensor shift technology), all standard exposure modes of a modern SLR system and a...

Compact SLR system with sealed body ; Professional handling; however, a battery grip with additional shutter release button for portrait shots and an X-sync jack for a studio flash system are missing

Missing swivel monitor ; Missing WLAN features (Eye-Fi cards are supported)

Pentax K-50 Review

Until recently, the Pentax DSLR lineup consisted of the flagship K-5II/5IIs bodies along with the prosumer-featured K-30 masquerading as an entry-level Pentax owing to the absence of other models in the product line. All that changed in June 2013 with...

Very good still image quality ; Eye-Fi wireless compatibility ; Good continuous shooting speed ; In-body stabilization ; Weather sealed

No continuous AF during video capture ; Video on the slow side to initiate ; Kit lens lacks sharpness at maximum aperture

Coming barely a year after the introduction of their fine K-30 model, Pentax was wise enough to not stray from the formula of specifications and features that made the K-30 so desirable in rolling out the new K-50. By the same token, the new camera...

Everything that makes the Pentax system great, now at a lower price

If you're prone to pessimism, it's tempting to view the K-50 as a disappointingly stagnant release—really little more than a warmed-over, rounded-off, multi-hued K-30. Where's the innovation, Pentax? How many times can you release a slight variation on...

A weatherproof all-rounder well-suited to beginners

Pentax K-50 review

The Pentax K-50 is DSLR with 81 weather-resistant seals but can it compete with the likes of Canon, Nikon and Sony?

Weather resistant build ; Internal shake resistance ; Can run on AA batteries

Chunky body ; Fixed LCD ; Noisy lens

Sorry, comments aren't working right now.

Pentax K-50 review

Outstanding controls and a big viewfinder make this SLR a joy to use

Taken on its own terms, though, it's impossible not to admire the K-50. It offers the best shooting experience of any SLR in this price bracket, and its image quality is more than up to scratch. Though the Canon 700D remains our top all-round pick.

Pentax K-50

This is quite a meaty DSLR kit unit, however for me a little spoilt by its white colour, while this may be being picky – again – it does draw attention to the unit and if you are taking images in a ‘less savoury area' it could mean you are targeted.

The Pentx K50 Digital SLR (DSLR) camera weighs 885grams and measures 12.5x9.5x15cm with the supplied 18-55mm lens attached. Starting with the rear the 6.2x4.5cm TFT shows what settings you have selected and after shooting using the viewfinder shows the...
