Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 (with 18mm-70mm lens and 75mm-300mm lens) review

By Lori Grunin (cnet.com)

Exceptionally streamlined, comfortable shooting design ; broad, functional feature set, including sensor-shift image stabilizer ; excellent photo quality ; generally fast performance

A few design quirks ; proprietary hot shoe

A top-of-the-line amateur digital SLR camera, the Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 will delight Konica Minolta diehards and makes a great choice if you don't already have a stake in other lens systems.

Sony Alpha DSLR-A700

By PJ Jacobowitz (pcmag.com)

The Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 ($999.99, body only) may be a solid shooter, but there are other digital SLRs (D-SLRs) that will give you more for your thousand bucks. Sure, it can crank out five full-resolution images per second, and it performs better in ...

Low noise at high ISOs (excels at low-light shooting). Fast operation. HDMI out. Includes a remote control

Expensive for what you get. Soft images. Dull design. LCD doesn't support Live View. No video capability

The Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 takes superb low-light photos, but overall, there are better options for the price.

"A fantastic camera that is fun to shoot and easy to use"

By jmcoa (cnet.com)

Adding to "Pros": the ergonomics is the best ...

Built in anti shake. Environmental seals on controls. Excellent image quality (be sure you install the latest firmware which fixes all the earlier issues and complaints! Some new A700s come with the older firmware). Takes Minolta, Sony, & Zeiss glass

The flash shoe is proprietary but, thankfully, Sony flashes are really nice and other flash makers sell for this shoe. No screen preview but I have found that I don't use it anyway on bodies I have that do preview.

"She would have loved it if it were a Nikon..."

If somebody had told her this was a Nikon wit...

Everything about this camera is beyond excellent. It doesn't have any overkill B.S. that comes standard on Nikon and Canon. Sony cuts straight to quality and intuitive user-friendliness.

Doesn't have the gauche appeal of Nikon or Canon. You need to really love photography and stick to your guns.
