Panasonic DMR-XW380 Freeview HD DVD recorder review

The recession is lingering and the demand for HD has never been higher. The perfect time, then for folk paying the likes of Sky and Virgin every month to ditch their expensive monthly subscription deals and save money by buying an all-new Freeview+HD...

HD picture, recording options, Gracenote

EPG, crowded remote control, price

If Freeview HD recording and all round digital know-how is your aim, there's nothing quite like the XW380. It's a veritable one-stop solution for a home cinema, albeit one that hasn't embraced Blu-ray - but it comes at a high price

Fed up with paying monthly bills? Welcome to Freeview+HD – and DVD recording too!

Fabulous HD & SD pictures ; Upscaling ; Exhaustive recording options

Slow ; Squashed EPG ; Complex recording options ; No DivX HD support

Panasonic DMR-XW380 review

The Panasonic DMR-XW380 is a sleek PVR, and one that we think everyone will enjoy using. The problem is the hard drive is too small, it's too expensive and you can't save HD recordings to DVD.

Very stylish ; Easy to use ; Loads of useful features

High price ; Freeview picture quality not as good as some ; Small capacity

Archiving HD TV or AVCHD footage to DVDs can be handy, but it’s a trick that Panasonic have overlooked here.

With twin Freeview HD tuners, a 250GB hard drive and DVD recording, this is a flexible device

Functionality ; easy to use ; 250GB HDD tuners ; solid, all-round performance

Too pricey in our book

Easy to use PVR

Bought this to go with my Panasonic HD Telly, so can only comment on this as they are designed to work together using the Viera link. Can also use to pause live TV as it is a Freeview HD + box.

Great HD Box

I wanted a Freeview + HD box with both HDD and DVD recording and there aren't that many affordable boxes around with this spec'. It's early days but so far so good, set up was very easy and the picture and sound quality are excellent. I've not yet made...

Excellent buy.

Am very impressed with all the features especially the High definition channels and the recording of these. I also love the option of recording to the built in hard disc or the DVD recorder. All in all I am very pleased with this unit and can't fault...
