Panasonic DMR-XW380 Freeview HD DVD recorder review

The recession is lingering and the demand for HD has never been higher. The perfect time, then for folk paying the likes of Sky and Virgin every month to ditch their expensive monthly subscription deals and save money by buying an all-new Freeview+HD...

HD picture, recording options, Gracenote

EPG, crowded remote control, price

If Freeview HD recording and all round digital know-how is your aim, there's nothing quite like the XW380. It's a veritable one-stop solution for a home cinema, albeit one that hasn't embraced Blu-ray - but it comes at a high price

Fed up with paying monthly bills? Welcome to Freeview+HD – and DVD recording too!

Fabulous HD & SD pictures ; Upscaling ; Exhaustive recording options

Slow ; Squashed EPG ; Complex recording options ; No DivX HD support

Panasonic DMR-XW380 review

The Panasonic DMR-XW380 is a sleek PVR, and one that we think everyone will enjoy using. The problem is the hard drive is too small, it's too expensive and you can't save HD recordings to DVD.

Very stylish ; Easy to use ; Loads of useful features

High price ; Freeview picture quality not as good as some ; Small capacity

At £400, the Panasonic DMR-XW380 is £100 more than a 500GB Freeview HD PVR will cost you. What you're getting for your hundred quid is the ability to put recordings onto DVD, and, of course, playback retail DVDs. If you're in the market for a DVD...

Panasonic DMR-XW380 review

We've got to admit that DVD recorders aren't our favourite products, even when they have built-in hard disks. We've universally found them to be hard to get to grips with, and fiddly to use even when you have. We're hoping to report all that has...

Archiving HD TV or AVCHD footage to DVDs can be handy, but it’s a trick that Panasonic have overlooked here.

Panasonic DMR-XW380

With twin Freeview HD tuners, a 250GB hard drive and DVD recording, this is a flexible device

Functionality ; easy to use ; 250GB HDD tuners ; solid, all-round performance

Too pricey in our book

An all round excellent performer, with one important caveat

I've found this unit to be very good at what it does. Even if the software is a little sluggish it's neat and tidy and pretty straightforward to understand. However, based on my experience with this unit and with a similar model purchased by my uncle,...

DMR-XW480 GLK Review - after 12 months of use

This DMR-XW480 GLK has been around our place for a year now and was itself a replacement for a DMR-XW380. Pretty much all the same features and comments as per my DMR-XW380 review. Nice improvements were the larger HDD and a few simplified and...

Excellent ALL rounder - Brand image changer

I replaced an older model recorder and i must say this one is worlds apart. It allows for easy navigation where i have never had to rely on the user manual. For a machine with so many features this is exceptional. I am especially impressed with the...

Perfect Panasonic

This perfect Panasonic PVR has got all the features & 250GB is plenty of storage for heaps of regular recording. I have not had a single problem with it & has been easy to use & operate. Panasonic remote syncs with our Sony TV & works great. One of my...

Reliable, Twin HD tuner, 60 sec FF,

Wifi not built in - requires USB dongle, EPG can be unreliable

Good dvd recorder and set top box

I have had this for over a year and very happy with it, never had any problems with it needing servicing etc. i gave it 5 stars because it is a very good machine. The tv guide, recording and editing functions are worth 5 stars but i wish Panasonic...

Good TV guide, can record from Foxtel, recording is easy and intuative

Cannot record directly onto disk, DVD-RW functionality is not as good as DVD+RW recorders, remote control has too many buttons, high speed recording doesn't work on 2 hour programmes
