Humax PVR-8000T PVR review

Humax hope you think the VCR is dead enough to throw your current VHS deck in the dustbin and buy its PVR (personal video recorder) unit as a replacement, forgetting the past in one swift move. On the outside the PVR-8000T is a sleek, shiny box that...

Capable of replacing your VCR; Freeview

Noisy fan; 20hrs is only five 4hr tapes

It’s a good PVR albeit with channel locking to what you're recording and can only “replace” five tapes at a time, but still good technology.

Humax PVR-8000T

One of a new breed of digital PVRs, the Humax PVR-8000T acts as both a digital set-top box and video recorder, storing recorded movies on its internal...

Relatively inexpensive, always-on timeshifting, nice design

No HDTV support, no archival support, could use a larger HD

The Humax PVR-8000T is unspectacular, but does a decent job as both PVR and digital set-top box.

Large 80GB HDD gives 40 hours storage ; No image or sound degradation on recordings ; Ease of use

Can't simultaneously watch and record ; Relatively loud hard drive

What a shame, then, that there's no feature to automatically record every episode of the same series like Sky+ and Windows Media Centre offers. The dual tuner issue might sound slightly snobbish, but when you've used the box for a week you'll realise...

Review: Humax PVR-8000T

Don Bradbury looks at a hard disk video recorder cum Freeview tuner

Integrated Freeview decoder

Not a full EPG

The Humax PVR-8000T looks like a good buy. With full MPEG2 and DVB-T compliance, a PVR with a Freeview tuner built in not only saves on space under the TV but potentially restricts the cash outlay, too, if you don't already have a tape-based video...
