Panasonic does it right again

So I've had this recorder for over a year and a half. I use it every day to record for later viewing and archiving when I want to keep it. It records to hard drive flawlessly and archives to DVD +/- R, 99% of the time. Sometimes if the video has been...

Good menu navigation, 99% dependable dubbing, 100% hard drive recording and scheduling.

The newer models have firewire input.

What's wrong with the E50

I purchased my Panasonic DMR-E50K (black model) in July of 2004. I don't no why some people are having problems recording to certain brand of Disc's. I've used Office Depot, HP, JVC, Memorex, Phillips DVD-R & all were recorded successfully! All my DVD ...

Records on almost any "popular" brand DVD-R Disc. LP recordings are 640x480 size like SP!

Can't change the chapter settings from 5 mins. Premature cooling fan failures!

Works OK but user interface engineering team should be FIRED

OK I've had this for about 1 year now. It records shows fine, but has some significant user interface problems. 1) You cannot record a program and watch a different one at the same time. A guess the $10 for another tuner is too much to ask. You can ...

Records shows and good price

Maddeningly lame user interface. If you like to channel surf, get something else.

Love/hate relationship with a DVD recorder

A while ago, CNN reported that Americans spend, on average, 20 minutes trying to get a new “gadget” to work before taking it back for a refund. If this is your approach to new electronics toys, don’t even think about it with this one. It is...

Lots of features and flexibility at a moderate price

Not easy to use, awkward remote, difficult instructions

Does what it advertises

I purchased the EH50 after first owning and returning a Panasonic E85H. That unit had firmware issues that could not be resolved, but being a Panasonic fan I stuck with them and tried this one. My persistence seems to have worked. This unit does all I ...

Picture quality, ease of use, IR blaster, High speed dubbing.

TV Guide, remote thumbwheel, Owners manual, inability to transfer chapters to DVD

Great little machine

I have wanted a DVD recorder and DVR for quite a while. I finally decided it was time to bite the bullet and buy one. I was running out of room to store videotapes, and hoped to start dubbing the indispensible ones to DVD and free up some room. ...

Picture quality, uses nearly all media. Great feature set for the price.

Often confusing menus and manual. Scroll wheel on remote is annoying.

Didn't meet expectations

Bought in September, went bad in December. I mainly used this to dub home movies. This is my 3rd consecutive panasonic unit that I've bought. You can read my reviews for the others. This unit has worked great until now. I did have some timer problems ...

Easy to use, TV Guide

Hard drive failure

Product Specifications

The DMRE50 supports DVD-RAM which offers the benefits of total flexibility and convenience. It's not simply VHS in DVD form, but a format that provides increased user access to programs, convenient playback and recording functions, all on a durable disc which offers large storage capacity. It's a format that delivers a host of exciting and meaningful benefits designed to meet consumers' demands and expectations in the digital age. This model allows users to record superb digital video onto both DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs. The ability to record/playback on both DVD-RAM and DVD-R media provides the best of both worlds: DVD-R for the highest compatibility, allowing users to playback recordings on virtually any DVD player; and DVD-RAM for re-writability and advanced functions such as Time Slip for chasing playback and simultaneous record/playback. DVD-RAM technology offers the perfect solution for recording and re-recording favorite programs - over a 100, 000 times on the same disc - and provides huge storage capacity of 4.7 to 9.6GB per disc. In EP mode, up to 12 hours (6 hours per side) recording time is available on a 9.4GB double-sided disc, while a 4.7GB DVD-R disc in EP mode offers 6 hours recording time. There is a choice of four recording modes or alternatively users can choose the FR mode which automatically selects the optimum recording time with the best picture quality taking into consideration the remaining space on disc. With Panasonic's unique Time Slip feature the recorder's Simultaneous Record and Play function enables the recording of one program and playback of another. The DMRE50 also provides a 16-programmed timer recording feature. Time Slip's Chasing Playback is another convenient function which enables users to watch a recording that has already started, from the beginning, as the unit continues to record to the end of the program. In addition to virtually unlimited re-write capability, the DMRE50 allows you to use your DVD recorder like a personal video recorder. Recording is instantaneous with the touch of one button. Unlike other formats, where disc space has to be found manually, DVD-RAM's random access enables the DMRE50 to search for blank sections on the discs and starts recording at the touch of a button. There are no more worries about mistakenly recording over existing programs. Direct Navigator mode provides fast access to recorded programs by displaying a list of programs recorded on a disc. Simply click on the desired program and it immediately starts - even as another program is being recorded at the same time. The quick playback feature enables recordings to be viewed at 1.3 time normal speed with the sound adjusted to remain audible whilst staying in sync with the visual image. In addition to recording new video content, the DMRE50 also allows consumers to transfer their favorite VHS tape recordings to space-saving discs. Personal movie libraries and family videos can be archived, preserved, and easily cataloged and accessed. When connected to home cinema components, the DMRE50 enables playback of multiple digital entertainment formats, including DVD video, music CDs, CD-R, CD-RW discs and MP3. Finding and viewing recorded material is fast and easy because there's no need to search, fast-forward or rewind. The DMRE50 also provides a major benefit to the video editing enthusiast. The Playlist function lets the user perform simple non-linear video editing - such as rearranging the order of scenes, skipping over unwanted scenes and creating custom playlists of favorite scenes on a disc.
