I would say buy this model

It makes the disks playable in most any DVD player. Well worth the price!

NewEGG of course, I had this unit up and running in no time at all. I really didnt even need to read the instructions. I wanted to back up some VHS stuff i have and it worked like a charm

On some tapes you have to deal with it being copywritten so it wont work for that. Oh well

Panasonic is the best

Forget Sony. Sony has always give me nothing but problems. Panasonic is always the way to go. Not many machines are compatible with a lot of Disc media. And this machine can read and write almost anything. DVD-Ram is awesome. But make sure your PC DVD...

It takes a day to understand all the features. Not a problem, if you are Tech savey. Makes sure you have a decent grasp of TV technology to get full use of all the features ; Not a con. But I wish that Component video would up-convert signals to HD......

It's the best DVD recorder/VCR combo out there. You have the ability to be recording a show and watching the same show or other shows at the same time. Just like a TIVO, except I dont have to pay a monthly service fee. :) ; You can watch a show...

Good machine

I've had this unit for nearly a year. I'd wanted a DVD/VCR recorder for a long time. It was expensive, but my wife bought it for my birthday. I've loved being able to record digitally. The picture quality beats tape hands down. There is a ...

It's a solid, versatile combination DVD/VCR recorder that can read and write all DVD formats.

Steep learning curve. Time consuming functions (such as loading or ejecting discs).

Panasonic DMR-ES45VS DVD recorder/VCR combo

From the first week (early November 2006) this unit randomly shut itself down - sometimes it happened twice a day and sometimes it would go for weeks. The first tech told us that he never heard of that problem. The manual is very confusing so we...

It records most of the time.

Support VERY BAD. Random shutdowns. Won't flow satellite signal through. Won't record from antenna.

Product Specifications

You sit down to watch this week's episode of your favorite show and realize that you never got around to watching your recording of last week's episode. Not a problem with Time Slip, featuring simultaneous record and play. Select this week's episode in the program guide, start recording, and as it records you can watch your recording of last week's episode. What if you set up your DVD recorder to record a movie from 8:00 to 10:00 while you're out, but dinner was faster than you expected and you get home early? With the Chasing Playback feature, you don't have to wait for the program to finish recording in order to watch it. You can begin watching the portion of the program that has already been saved while the DVD recorder continues recording the remainder of the program. If you own a VCR, it's almost certain that at some point someone has accidentally recorded over a movie or show that you wanted to keep. One-Touch Record will save your favorite programs from the same fate by automatically scanning the disc for blank space before starting the recording process. No more worries that your favorite sitcom's season finale will be overwritten by a family member's Sunday fishing show. You and your family are sure to enjoy the convenience of your DVD recorder so much that you'll have a large library of recordings in no time. Keeping track of all those programs would be difficult if it weren't for the enhanced Direct Navigator, which displays thumbnails of every program on the disc as you browse, making it easy to identify the contents of each recording. It can be heartbreaking when you play an old VHS home video and find that years of playback have degraded the image and sound quality. Preserve your precious VHS tapes by transferring them to DVD, which will provide durability and many years of enjoyment. With One-Touch 2-Way Transfer, you can dub a VHS tape to DVD by pushing a single button. The goal of any playback device should be accurate reproduction of the original content. In the case of DVDs, most of that content is film-based. Utilizing advanced progressive scan playback techniques and very accurate MPEG video decoders, this DVD recorder provides an image that faithfully represents the image you see at your favorite movie theater.
