Expert review by:

The Panasonic DMR-EX79 DVD recorder has a reasonable price, but the lack of a high-definition digital TV tuner lets it down.

The Panasonic DMR-EX79 DVD recorder looks good and has an excellent DVD upscaler, but its remote control is not suited to watching DVDs and the lack of a high-definition tuner means it can't display or record HD content.

Good DVD upscaling, 250GB hard drive, stylish design

No built-in HD tuner, remote control could be better

Panasonic DMR-EX79 review

The Panasonic DMR-EX79 is a good, sturdy machine that's a pleasure to use. It is, however, let down by its relatively high price and the fact that it offers only a single Freeview tuner. Due to its good performance, though, we're more than happy to...

Decent styling ; Good picture and sound quality ; DVD writer adds virtually unlimited storage capability

Expensive ; Lack of second Freeview tuner

In terms of functionality, we miss having a second Freeview tuner. With all new TVs in the last four years or so having built-in Freeview, having two tuners becomes less of an issue. It's still a problem, though, when it comes to recording two channels...

Panasonic DMR-EX79 review

Despite its inability to decode high-definition signals, the Panasonic DMR-EX79 offers a reasonable feature set given its £317 price.

While the Panasonic DMR-EX79 is a capable DVD recorder with a decent-sized hard drive and excellent DVD upscaling, it is let down by the lack of an HD tuner. Even so, it's worth considering because of its price.

Panasonic DMR-EX79 DVD / HDD Recorder

The Panasonic DMR-EX79 is one of the best DVD/HDD combis we've encountered, particularly for under £300.

The DMR-EX79 continues the great work of previous Panasonic recorders but throws a few new tricks into the mix to keep you interested. In terms of recording, editing and media playback it leaves no stone unturned, plus its picture quality is solid and...

The Panasonic DMR-EX79 is a DVD recorder with a 250GB hard drive and an HDMI 1.3 port for upscaling DVDs to 1080p but lacks a HD tuner.

Capable DVD recorder, good sized 250GB hard drive, good DVD upscaler, Gracenote CD database support

No HD tuner, can't decode high-definition signals, poor remote control, unable to transfer data to USB drives

While the Panasonic DMR-EX79 is a capable DVD recorder with a decent-sized hard drive and excellent DVD upscaling, it is let down by the lack of an HD tuner. Even so, it's worth considering because of its price.

A pleasurable experience

I had never owned a hard drive recorder before and thought I would have problems but I was amazed to find how easy it was to use. The quality is fantastic and I am enjoying using it very much.

Fantastic and easy to use

After finally deciding to move into the 21st century and move from our square tv to a 50" widescreen we decided to also buy a dvd recorder. This is absolutely superb. Not being very technically minded, I've still found this really easy to use and have...
