Panasonic DMR-EX88 review

The DMR-EX88 is one of the first DVD/HDD combis to boast a Freeview Playback badge, which means it not only boasts an integrated Freeview tuner and 7-day EPG, but it can also record an entire series at the touch of a button. It'll even detect schedule...

Good features and icture quality ; Ease of use

Exensive ; No WMA ; Dull design

Panasonic DMR-EX88 review

A sturdy performer that will do virtually everything you could ever want a DVD player, recorder and PVR to do. The DivX and XviD playback from disc or USB is a really nice addition that improves the machine over previous iterations

Picture and sound quality ; Huge number of useful features ; Fairly easy to use

Only one tuner ; Slightly too expensive ; LP and EP picture modes are pretty grim quality

There isn't much we'd suggest that beats this machine, purely because it does everything. There are better upscaling DVD players and more versatile Freeview recorders, but there isn't much that does it all. Ultimately, we think the Panasonic DMR-EX88...

Panasonic DMR-EX88

With a massive 400GB hard drive, the Panasonic DMR-EX88 can record a whopping 712 hours – that's nearly 30 days – of telly!

Stupendous hard-disk space means hours of excellent recordings ; complete spec ; very easy to use ; terrific picture and sound quality

Only that Panasonic' ; s cheaper DMR-EX78 is very nearly as good

Excellent ergonomics for easy recording It'd be all-too-easy for all this flexibility to become overwhelming, but the DMR-EX88's usability is exemplary.

The 400GB hard-disk holds up to 712 hours of TV but if you want to record onto DVD (or copy programmes from the hard-disk) then the unit accepts any format you throw at it, including dual-layer DVD-R and DVD+R discs.

Loads of features, ease of use, recording quality

No WMA playback, can't transfer DivX to HDD

Very pleased with this PVR - has all the benefits of my previous Panasonic, with some added functions and a bigger HDD (although why not a 500GB or even 1TB? - they are cheap enough). I must admit to being a Panavision enthusiast in the TV / PVR (and...
