Philips DVDR5500H review

With hard-disk recorders now dominating the market, standalone DVD recorders aren't quite as fashionable as they used to be. But the latest deck in Philips' line-up has the enviable distinction of being the slimmest model ever to land on our test bench.

Slimline chassis ; Built-in Freeview tuner ; Imroved EPG

Limited editing ; No 1080 uscaling ; Some icture flaws

Philips DVDR5500 review

The Philips DVDR5500 produces great quality recordings, looks stylish and is easy to use. Its DVD playback quality may only be so-so, but at this price it still represents good value for money

Impressive recording quality ; Excellent range of ports ; Good DivX support

Playback quality is good, but not perfect

Conclusion Despite some niggles over its picture quality and the annoying info bar, we still think this Philips is a good buy of the money. It makes excellent recordings, is easy to use and is none to shabby to look at either

Philips DVDR5500 DVD Recorder

If you're looking for a DVD recorder with a built-in Freeview tuner, the Philips DVDR5500 is worth a look.

The DVDR550 might not be the last word in Freeview or DVD picture quality and editing features are limited, but the inclusion of a digital tuner and 1080i upscaling on such an affordably-priced recorder is a real bonus. Also pleasing is the...

A waste of money

A waste of money

We bought a Phillips DVDR 5500 and have had nothing but problems with it. As many other reviewers have said it freezes regularly and the only cure is by unplugging it at the mains. You can record DVD's with it as its name suggests but the DVD's are...

It's a good job Philips don't make pacemakers

It's a good job Philips don't make pacemakers

I can only concur with reviewer Ash. I've had all the problems he's mentioned. What really bugs me is having to hit the eject button about 20 times before the damn thing will respond. HDMI upscaling is rubbish too. Freeview channels work okay though. ...
