Philips DVDR5520 review

Somewhat more run-of-the mill in styling terms than the quirky Philips DVD recorders of old, the DVDR5520 combines DVD recording with 160GB of HDD capacity, a single digital tuner and HDMI upscaling all the way to 1080p.

5.1 recording ; Good AV ; Funky clickwheel remote

Ponderously unresonsive ; Can’t transfer 5.1 to (comatible) DVD ; No otical inut

Philips DVDR5520H

The 5520 incorporates a USB 2.0 port for 'complete file transferability'. In other words, you can copy at will between the DVD, HDD and USB

5.1 recording ; Good AV ; Funky clickwheel remote

Ponderously unresponsive ; Can't transfer 5.1 to (compatible) DVD ; No optical input

Upscaling works well subjectively, although the 5520 fails the HQV jaggies test

Philips DVDR5520H review

Not a bad all-rounder. We like the picture and sound quality and there are enough features to justify the asking price, but we were annoyed by how the menu system operated at times

Picture and sound quality ; Design

Menus are quite slow at times and rather annoying

Conclusion Overall, we rather like the Philips DVDR5520H. It's a competent machine, which has an awful lot of very useful features and it seems to be priced sensibly. It's not always the most usable device though, and we'd suggest that you'll get...

Philips DVDR5520H DVD/HDD Recorder

We liked Philips' DVDR5570H recorder, so things look promising for its almost identical DVDR5520H sibling.

The DVDR5520H can't quite match the high standards set by the latest recorders from the Panasonic camp, but it comes mighty close. And in some areas, it's actually better - in particular its live TV flexibility boosted by the terrific Time Shift...

Philips DVDR 5520

Depending on which of the six recording modes you choose, up to 180 hours of video cam be crammed onto the HDD. The 5520's USB 2.0 port allows you to copy JPEG, DivX and MP3/WMA files at will between the DVD, HDD and solid-state USB memory devices....

5.1 recording, funky clickwheel remote, strong AV performance

Ponderously unresponsive, 5.1 audio can only be played on the 5520

DVDR5520H - Slow Phillips Hard disk/DVD recorder

DVDR5520H - Slow Phillips Hard disk/DVD recorder

I'd think twice about buying one of these - Why? The thing takes an age to get started when switched on, I'm not joking, not just a few seconds, feels like several minutes! The whole thing freezes and gets itself in a muddle, you just have to wait...

Bad Bad Product from Philips

Bad Bad Product from Philips

A number of years ago I bought a Philips DVD-RW with USB. I plug in my HDD and watched movies or photo's from my HDD. I bought this unit, also has USB, BUT only for pendrives...WHAT!, Yes. The freeview interface is just, well, not good. Press the...

a little eccentric

An adequate all round recorder, however it has it's faults. \n1)no zoom button on the remote control, well one that you can't access quickly and easily. \n2)fast forwarding is a bit of a nightmare,as you have to hold down the button for an age before it...

Buggy, unreliable, clunky. Avoid.

Buggy, unreliable, clunky. Avoid.

The DVDR5520H is the cheaper sibling of the DVDR5570H, the only difference being a smaller HDD capacity. Unfortunately this also means the DVDR5520H suffers from all the instability, clunkiness and bugs - everything from crashes/freeze ups during...
