Philips DVDR5570H review

An AV centre in disguise', reads the blurb that accompanies Philips' latest recorder, and it's a fitting description. Not only can the DVDR5570H record television programmes on its hard disk, but it also bridges the gap between your PC and TV by...

Time Shift Buffer ; Commercial Block ; Aealing design ; Wealth of features ; Good remote control

Some icture issues ; Basic editing otions ; No Freeview Playback

Philips DVDR5570

If £330 seems expensive for a DVD/HDD recorder, just remember that it gets you a 250GB hard disk and a wealth of features, many of which you simply won't find anywhere else

Time Shift Buffer ; Commercial Block ; Appealing design ; Wealth of features ; Good remote control

Some picture issues ; Basic editing options ; No Freeview Playback

Moving on to the machine's more advanced functions, the jewel in its crown is Time Shift Buffer, a clever means of pausing and rewinding live TV, or recording programmes retrospectively. It continually stores whatever you're watching for up to six...

Philips DVDR5570H DVD/HDD Recorder

Philips is describing the DVDR5570H as an 'AV centre in disguise', so Danny sets about revealing its true identity.

In terms of features, looks and connections, the DVDR5570H is up there with the best models on the market. Time Shift Buffer is the killer feature, offering a level of playback versatility usually reserved for PVRs, while the Jukebox, Freeview tuner...

Philips DVDR5570H

A decent DVD/HDD machine is let down by poor usability and sluggish control - it's also at the top end of the price bracket

Easy on the eye ; clear remote control ; good specs ; faithful recordings ; decent DVD picture

Cumbersome control system ; menus are confusing ; time lag when selecting channels or recordings

The other feature guaranteed to bring a smile to your face is Commercial Block, which automatically puts chapter markers at the start and end of adverts so you can skip right past them at the touch of a button.

Looks, Time Shift Buffer, remote, recording quality

No series recording, basic editing

Most User Un Friendly

Most User Un Friendly

A very good capacity HDD from Philips but totally ruined with some ease of use features missing. \n1. The most glaring omission for me is the lack of a button to toggle between a regular tv channel and HDD, when you switch the unit on it automatically...

Good Product

I like this product but I don't like the Guideplus+ tv listings service that comes attached. I frequently have problems. The owners of Guideplus cannot be contacted as they don't publish contact details and refer you to the manufacturer. I...

Buggy, unreliable, clunky. Avoid.

Buggy, unreliable, clunky. Avoid.

I owned one of these for a while. After numerous crashes, glitches, freezes, reboots, and lost programmes (including the unit recording 45 mins of blackness), I've had enough and am sending this machine back as being unfit for purpose. Such a shame -...

Great Features, needs some TLC

Great Features, needs some TLC

I've had this unit since April 08 and like other reviewers have a bit of a love-hate relationship with it. At first tremendously buggy, firmware upgrades (to 3.x) have helped avoid continuous random crashes requiring a full reset. But still I agree...
